Trading in my lenses for a single one?

Hi. Currently I have a Canon T7i (800D), with the kit 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS STM as well as a Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8.

I've been looking at the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DC EX HSM. As it stands, I could get a used one for about 230€.

I was wondering if the Sigma's a good improvement over the kit lens, and if kit is worth selling for this one.

Another question I have is if I should also sell my 50mm Yongnuo? I often find myself scared to go under 2.8 in fear of a sharpness decay, and things going out of focus. However, that may be my fault, due to lack of experience/skill.

Considering the Sigma can act as a 50mm 2.8, maybe I could also sell the Yongnuo? Or do you think 1.8 is just a matter of mastering and I should just keep it?

Thanks in advance,

Sergio.

If the price you can get for the Yongnuo 50mm is not much (which I suspect will be the case), then you may as well hang onto it.

I'd be able to get just about what I payed for it, around 50-60€. It's a considerable amount of money I could use for the the Sigma, that's why I'm not sure.

I would like a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or similar for photographing in low-light conditions without having to use the tripod so much.

But I would still keep the kit 18-55 for a compact and lightweight carry option.

The Youngnuo is $44 brand new, with free shipping. I can't see it being worth the hassle to resell used; I would just give it to someone.

More than I would have expected. Selling it is up to you.

Luckily, since I'm in Portugal, I can sell it for about as much as got it for (a little less, most likely). The lens is basically new, and still under warranty etc, so it should sell fast.

Is weight the only pro of keeping the kit lens?

The 18-55 kit is also smaller, slightly less conspicuous for street photography. It could also be your sacrificial goat at the beach. I keep mine around simply as a reference. I can always say "and here is how the kit zoom compares". But I am a hopeless gearhead.

I can't speak to the image quality of those particular Sigma and Canon lenses.

I do a lot of backcountry hiking and air travel, so having a lens that weighs less and takes up less space is a major factor when shopping, in addition to price / replaceability.

While I'd love to keep the lens (especially because it's nice for filming, due to how silent it is), selling it would mean cutting down half the price on the Sigma. That's why I'm wondering how much of an improvement it would really be.

I just don't have any experiences with those particular lenses. Your best bet is to study the sample images at review sites and ask in the Canon forum here at DPR.

Good luck!
