The Stuff that has my interest

1. Better stabilization up to 4K60FPS.

2. Hyper-lapse and it's associated stabilization.

3. Better pairing with a phone.

4. Better sound.

The stuff I am REALLY NOT interested in...

1. Portrait Mode.

2. Short clips.

The Stuff I am PRAYING for...

1. Reliability.

Yep, that's it.

...or is there simply no need since they are clearly much, much better than GoPro?

😉

Let's see how they respond without the benefit of their own special internal chips ala GoPro's GP1 processor, and increased processing memory.

😂

I've had zero reliability concerns with GoPros. Great build quality compared to some other Action Cameras.

🏁

Maybe they will respond with a firmware update, which they give us for free. This GoPro update seems like not much more than a firmware update!

Yi do have some real hardware changes in the pipeline, not just a little extra memory.

stabilization, proper live view, audio, new modes, out of the camera look, reduced Rolling Shutter, underwater color compensation, etc.

Waiting.

But rather than just COPY GoPro yet again, why not innovate??!!?

If they can beat the best I'm happy to try them again. Not ready for prime time in some ways, but they can improve if they so decide.

Really, Yi should bump their build quality while they are at it.

Unreliable? That makes all of the good stuff immaterial, no?

Yeah, that should have been at the top of the list I guess. While some people have never had a problem with any Gopro products ever mine have all eventually failed. Now that being said I have about 15 TBs of video shot through Gopos and my theory is that the long record times I subject them to (and subsequent overheating problems they suffer from) has been killing them. While one could argue that I am not using them as an "ACTION camera" persay other offerings on the market have been surviving just fine!

and

And

AND

if they do die the 1/3 the cost price point makes replacing them not so painful. At this point has GoPro upped their game with the 6 and now the 7? sure, but I have poured alot of money into them over the years only to find better cheaper. If the 7 is suddenly the "IT camera" in action cameras I will only buy 1 for a specific use case. I will not replace the 6 others I use.

With so much less need for a gimbal for many types of shooting, this can represent a cost savings to many users imo.

More Butter, Less Clutter™ as they say.

A gimbal remains an option of course but is SO much less mandatory.

But for some of the Yi plus a definitely mandatory Gimbal folks, well they may be wondering when Yi will copy GoPro's latest step.

I'm wondering how long it will take Yi to mimic the Hero 7, do you think they can do it this year?

Check with the 6 x 17 person above for the weekly failure blog coming very soon.

I just don't run into the endless chronic woes some do.

Yet I use my GoPros hard, in hot weather and they just keep on going, so odd.

And for many years now.

For my gimbal time, well that keeps the GoPro at 100% battery.

So with using the gimbal less of the time ima make sure I have spare batteries handy.

I think I can manage that, thinking and planning ahead.

If something about your use just breaks things endlessly 6 x 17, see if you can sort that out in some manner. Don't know how you put up with the same problems every day, I'd just fix it personally.

I mean the best thing about stopping hitting your head against the wall is how good normal shooting can be without the daily failures.

If Yi really wants to up their game they need to go to a physical stabilization of the sensor and... up their sensor size.

That would tilt the action camera world on its ear I think! What will they do in the rest of 2018? prolly nothin.

is Gopros handheld stabilization the best on the market right now? YES it is! The 6 beats anything else I have tried but generally If I do have to film something moving it's in a gimbal. The 6 offers for me only a small but important use case for stabilized handheld shooting.

Why did they have poor stabilisation and rolling shutter correction before? Other cameras have been doing those well for ages!

And they claimed to have brilliant audio for the Hero 5, obviously we shouldn't have believed that claim?

Well we will have to wait and see what they release, but like 6 x 17 says, the future of stabilisation is physical, because with EIS it is impossible to remove the motion blur from camera shake, .
Really, Yi should bump their build quality while they are at it.
Not sure about that, if people want GoPro quality then they will buy a GoPro. Yi has it's own standard which has been proving popular with its customers, so why would they change?

Mind you, they need to give that touchscreen a bit more protection from falls!

....cuz big jump over the 5. And its NON-hyper stabilization is quite decent. RS is fine, great device. ALL of the GoPros have excellent build quality in my experience.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing the one guy talk about how Yi outsells GoPro and is better in all ways and his gopros always break, leak polar bear snot, and expired in flames.

Best.

GoPro.

Ever.

do at the Yi's 79 dollar price point though.

😉

Beside the Yi physical build quality is still too "cereal box toy" in nature. How could they do a more complex device and have people want to buy one?!

Well they could but it would lose their main advantage, price. Part of the reason for that is that they are not a company that can innovate. Instead they study other products they like, and then copy them, decontented. They must be very busy lately looking for ways to copy what GoPro already has.

Like I noted awhile back part of the secret is GoPro's GP1 processing chip. Which Yi cannot buy very easily. Maybe they can try for a comparable chip? By the time they do, the GP2 will be coming...this is the 2nd camera for the GP1 (Hero 6 and now Hero 7). So they have had some time to work the scanners and copying machines I guess.

If they are truly a challenger, they will have a Hero 7 killer out soon, 4-5 month max.

If they don't that is okay, perhaps another view could be to just stick with the cheap copies of Hero 4/5s with some updates.

There is nothing very special about that "secret" GP1, if Yi wanted a similar chip then they just need to ask GoPro's supplier! The GP1 may be slightly customised but it is based on a standard chip design that is available: https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...r-the-magic-behind-hero6-black-300528789.html

...the GP1 can be easily bought by anyone, WHY hasn't Yi done so?

They could have beaten GoPro's rave reviewed Hero 7 long ago!!!

And had plenty of time to bump the build quality and add new features GoPro won't have until the Hero 10.

No?

Or Sony for that matter could have beaten both. Their optical stabilization while unique is a primitive example of the breed. Could jive well with some best in class EIS?

I wonder who will be the one to dethrone GoPro.

Check I am on it! A whole litany of Gopro failures of REALLY important shots that ain't never gonna happen again...

At a sitting do you run your Gopros for 6 to 8 hours straight stopping only to change SD cards? and do you do this over and over and over? I have over 16 TERRA bytes of video and I am working on filling up more.

Ohhh I did 5 Mijia 4K cameras later and I get better video and way Way WAY fewer failures.

Ohhhh tell me about it!

This directed at me? I don't own a Yi and haven't had the chance to try one. My Gopros do indeed "always break, leak polar bear snot, and expire in flames."

I'm past that. ;-) Running more than 1 action cam chews up data fast. At 200-250GB a day now for 1 hours 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Before this was only 70GB a day.

It looks pretty damn good! The problem with hyper-lapses in the past has been stabilization, it HAD to be shot on a gimbal!

Sooo this is a Nod to gopro.

Again Praying they made a reliable camera!

Odds seem good?

I mean same body as last few years, three models in a row, many carryover or updated parts just revised with time, mostly the same core suppliers. Existing, well-proven, and broadly capable mount system, familiar to many of us.

If anything reliability should be as good or better than the great results they have had the last few years.

Some users are not really able to geek, they have other skills instead. They may just get irritated?

GoPros rewards geekers with some patience and a can-do attitude to solve key aspects of their latest shoot.

I expect the normal later in the year firmware update. Apparently the 6 will get at least the new UI and a tidbit or two via firmware, I like when GoPro does that. Nikon does too, classy. But things that come out in the first release firmware get some clean up as needed.

I was in Florida last month to the beach with a cheap $50 action cam. While the cam does everything i need for (clear video), but taking camera on/off the case is not fun. So, I may swing for Gopro 7 as I like the idea of waterproof without the case, unless the knock-off version can at least produce the no-case waterproof cam like Gopro.
