Nikon D500 won't turn off ...

So, just to explain I am new to this site and have written a very similar post in another thread related to this very subject. Didn’t mean to spam site by resurrecting old threads! What’s not clear to me is if this issue is still quite common? When researching this weekend I noticed that people stopped posting about it a few months ago.
Your post here is most welcome.

The problem is common enough that it would not be at all far-fetched that it happened to you. I for one will be interested to see what Nikon says about it, and am also interested in the approximate serial number of your camera. You can also contact Thom Hogan about this as he is likely to have some information that would also be worth sharing here. Good luck.
Thanks. As it happens I did send Thom a quick email, but he hasn’t responded yet. Would be interesting to tie serial numbers to the issue, but I’m not sure if that’s the kind of info people will be willing to share(?). I did tell Thom serial number for camera in my email. Is there a minimum set of digits from serial number that will identify date of manufacture? I was using previous firmware (1.12 or 1.13?) had not updated to latest 1.14 that came out few weeks back. Will let you know when Nikon service respond.

So, update of sorts. The repair work on my camera is on hold for parts. Called Nikon support and the lady said they are most likely having to replace the power supply module board, but exact details will be confirmed later when they have performed and confirmed repair.

Appears that D850 is exibiting same/similar "won't turn off" issue, see link below. The OP, doesn't know about this issue, but his description, points 1-3, matches the problem I have with my D500 exactly.

https://www.nikonforums.com/forums/...ical-problems-and-sent-back-to-nikon-factory/

Seems like this is a serious quality issue that Nikon are struggling to resolve?

No camera is going to be 100% defect free, or even necessarily more than 95% defect free. Now if it's the same exact thing coming up over and over with a particular model, like what we were discussing with the D500 then it's a known issue, but a couple of reports from D850 owners that are not necessarily related is not enough to say there's a specific issue there. Basically, tens of thousands of D850 cameras have been sold and four people there had issues with their copies.

Kind of why I put a question mark after my last sentence... and a fair point of-course. Only thing we don't really know is the true scale of this issue as we only see what is published on-line. So, arguably also anecdotal to demote significance of this single report. What we do know now (or at-least I know) is that my D500 purchased late September 2017 and the OP's D850 in the other thread purchased end of Dec 2017 exhibited an issue with apparently "identical" manifestation (points 1-3 at-least). Just collecting data points...

The online bias is to report problems and not the other way around. For instance, in the thread you linked to four people said they had some sort of issue (not including the person with a lens issue) while only one person affirmed they had no issues with their camera (the lens person was mute about that).

Not nearly enough dots there to connect them.

Well, these and the other dots reported in this and other D500 won't turn off threads... Wouldn't seem strange to me if the aforementioned D850 thread is indicative of same issue as both D500 and D850 have very similar design. Scale of issue is hard to assess, I agree.

You thinking about buying a D850 or already have one? I've been considering the D850 for some time. Now that I am "cameraless" my motivation to buy one has increased :-). This is reason why I started researching reported D850 problems and stumbled upon the above thread...

JC is not going to buy a D850, he enjoys DX format.

The D850 appears to be a very solid camera, more so than the D750 or the D800. The D750 suffered numerous recalls, the D800 models with US serial numbers below 3055000 have a potential to need re-calibration of the AF system, and the D800 is more prone to being totaled if it is dropped due to a flawed design of its frame.

My next camera is almost certainly going to be a D500 or another D800/D800E and then a D500. The D850 is a great camera and could easily be the last camera you buy, so if you have the money I would definitely say go for it, I just don't have the money for that so have to make compromises based on optimum value.

The D500 is a fabulous camera, no doubt about that. At the time I bought it I really wanted to go full frame as I mainly shoot landscape. I knew the D850 was about to be launched, but also knew there could be a big wait, not to mention a very significant price jump. Also considered the D750. However, the D500 provided such a compelling overall package at the time it won the day. Optimum value as you put it. No regrets, it has proven to be a sheer joy to use, and also a very capable landscape camera, but I keep feeling the pull to go full frame. Not sure if I will go for the D850 as the total price including good FX glass is indeed formidable, but if I get a decent bonus some time, maybe :-)

Oh, just to add, the link I provided above to the “D850 won’t turn off” thread, I agree the evidence provided there IS only anecdotal in the sense that there was no real substance, follow on discussions, follow up with Nikon Service, etc. Not a reliable example to bring up perhaps.

No, I won't get a D850, as I am a DX bigot :-)

I am not even attracted by the newfangled Nikon mirrorless - unless they decide to make a Pro-DX version ... so my money is safe for now :-)

No, I would say you are a very knowledgeable DX aficionado!

So, today my camera status at Nikon Repair joint in LA was updated from "On hold for parts" to "Shop". Yipee, moving forward! :-) Might not have to buy a D850 afterall!!! :-P

So, my D500 is now in transit on its way back from LA. No word from Nikon yet on what they replaced. Only concrete info is that it was a “C Major Repair Service”. Camera was on hold for parts for three days. Once it was back in shop it seemed to go fast. Probably was like the Nikon support lady said “they are most likely going to change the power module PCB”. She also said that’s what they normally do for the “won’t turn ON” problem, but in her five years with Nikon she’s never encountered a “won’t turn off problem” such as the one I was describing! If there is no additional info with paperwork when I get camera back, I’ll probably call them to see if I can get more specific details.

Doesn’t seem to be a lot of action at this site. I feel obligated to keep you entertained :-)

Not a lot of action because this forum mostly talks about hardware. And generally the machines just work, fortunately. But the conclusion of what happened to you is helpful, people read the thread till the end and helps them if they encounter the same problem in the future.

Usually, you should get a repair report that (tersely) explains what they did (replace a part, did some adjustment), not necessarily what they found (low amplifier voltage, loose sensor, whatever, sometimes the dreaded "impact damage")and how much it costs.

Quite often, someone comes here, reports a problem, gets some suggestion on what to do, and never comes back to give a conclusion. Any information you can provide helps everyone :-)
