Massive new tariffs .... how will camera prices respond ?

a severe tariff has just been placed on Chinese photographic equipment a few hours ago.

10 % now going to 25 % in a few months

How will this reflect in the prices of cameras ?
there are probably much more important consequences to that.

My guess is that if there is an escalation on the Trade War, the USA will be the loser.
Of course that’s your guess. Good thing you have no idea what you’re talking about.
In trade wars, there are generally only losers. Hint to Trump: trade is not a zero sum game. This isn't real estate.

Dave
Tariffs don’t equal trade wars. It's how trade was conducted long before so-called free trade agreements came along, which in fact are not free trade. The West never even used to have the kind of full trade we have now with communist countries. Only stupid, naive or insane countries would turn over their industries to other countries, never mind a communist one.

Aren't quite a few Nikon lenses currently made in China though?
A few of the low end lenses, yes.

But rarely distributed from China.

Mostly added to kits in, and imported from, Thailand.
But also including:

851.8G

105 Macro

300/4 PF IF-ED VR

And the President can do this unilaterally because "it's a threat to national security"

Can someone please explain

Dave
Why do you need an explanation? You're not American.

Prices will increase

POTUS wants to drive up US industry and one of the methods is to make imports unattractive to the US consumer so that people switch to US products or so that manufacturing plants are moved.
The US camera manufacturing industry should be quite pleased then? ;-)
Yes, General Electric cameras will now be the preferred choice for patriotic american professional photographers.
Why do you care? You're not American.

Prices are defined not just by MSRPs and tariffs, but by consumer ability and willingness to pay.

While a very few cameras and lenses are in high demand, 99% of the camera market is already over- saturated at current prices. Good luck selling them even higher.

Tariffs will lead to even higher market saturation and over-production, manufacturers and retailers having to sell for lower (if any) profits, or at a loss, OEM stagnation, and small retailers going out of business.

Bingo

you can call me what ever names you want - I don't give a darn- I have news for you.

from camera bags - to lens - to tripods - to camera filters - to photo printers - to monitors to view your photos - you name it

lots of things to buy camera related will be getting an extra 25% tax - to think otherwise is foolish

It was a great company, and can be again.

My guess is manufacturers and sellers will absorb as much as they can, at least in the short run. With the current fight for market share nobody will want to raise prices - in fact Canon and Nikon likely factored the coming tariffs into the pricing on their new mirrorless line.

But of course none of them can absorb 25% so at some point this will hit the consumers hard. A 25% hit on something that for most of us is a hobby item is going to hurt everybody involved.

I believe that it is these very accessories described above that are the real profit items for camera stores.

what I am not clear about is if the tax is levied based on the percentage of Chinese components contained within a product.

for example - lets say a camera is made in Thailand using predominantly Chinese parts - would it still face said tax ?

LOL. With this comment you obviously show that you are more anti-american than me. Respect for other people opinions is something I regard as American.

I find I ironic that you write above comment in a thread about tariffs

People worldwide have to care what americans do because you always influence plenty of other nations and you make a ****load of mess that generally has no consequences for americans and plenty of consequences for people elsewhere.

If what america did only affected america I wouldn't care in the slightest personally, but that isn't the case on plenty of instances.

As for the topic, yeah, prices will go up, I personally am curious to see by how much and on which products specifically. That is, if this trade war keeps going which I think won't be the case unless the US government wants to keep spending tens of billions of dollars to bail out various sectors that are getting screwed by the tariffs.

Most of the items you listed are not imported from China.

So, I'll call you uninformed.
