viking CF card

used to have viking 128mb

got my rebate and never had a problem with the card
Does any one use Viking CF cards? I recently ordered a Viking 256M
CF card from Amazon.com for $39 plus a $10 rebate. The order is
already being shipped. Yesterday, I found many negative comments
about this card, poor quality or no rebate redeemed and so on, on
Amazon's website. I was wondering if I should not use the card and
return it to Amazon as soon as I get it. What your opinion?
Thanks!

For what it is worth, I have purchased a couple of Viking 1GB CFs and a couple of Viking 512 cards. Have had no problems whatsoever!! After a few months pass, even get the rebate! I have had a bad 256 Sandisk card that Sandisk replaced but so far so good with the Viking cards.

The price flucuates on Amazon with the 1 GB card, a low of $99 and a high around $160 with the rebate usually offered towards the end of the month. Why buy anything less than the 512 with the prices falling?

had a 512mb CF card, it won't go past 250mb on it. says "corrupted data" or something like that with a big question mark. i have two sandisk cards, never had a problem. i take a lot of pictures, so i've put the same wear on them.

also, viking never mailed me back 2 rebates over a year. so they're done.

Ok, so i'm considering of buying a 256Mb card. Viking is an option, but what about Lexar, Apacer, Kingston? I know that the SanDisc is OK, because everybody has said that these work properly (also are the most expensive).

And the SPEEDS: when i want to shoot 2.5 fps with my A80, then is 8x enough or should i get 16x... ???
(supposing that the 40x/80x will be toOo much.)

Thanks

been doing CT for almost a year now) that Viking quality is a little lower than Sandisk and Lexar. There seem to have have been more complaints. I don't believe Viking outsells Sandisk, just my opinion but Sandisk and Lexar are both huge, and we don't often hear of a Sandisk or Lexar failure (once in a while would be ok). For the Viking cards that don't fail, it's great for the owners - they got a good deal and get good performance. For the several who have to turn thieirs in, it's a hassle and they lose pictures. 4 stars out of 5 rating at Amazon is not really great, means there were some less than happy users. Odds are in your favor but who knows.

I am glad I'm using Sandisk and Lexar. One year ago my Sandisk 256 was $50 from Dell, a fair price for a newbie who didn't know anything. Recently, my latest Lexar 256 12x was $23 after rebate. It is interesting how the prices have dropped. You don't see much change month-to-month yet they drop over time. I recently had occasion to use all my CF in one outing (3-256s and 2-32s), and I had a few shots to spare! Don
My major concern is the quality. Lossing of images will definitely
ruin your happy mood. I don't know if other brand CF cards lose
images or not. If other brands have same chance to lose images, I'd
be happy to use the coming Viking CF card. If it's not the case,
I'd rather return the CF card immediately after I receive it and
choose another one without losing images.

A cheaper price makes you happy once. But a creditable quality
makes you never regret.

Any inputs for the comparison of Viking with other brand CF cards?
I found many negative comments
about this card, poor quality or no rebate redeemed and so on,
I have not had any problems with Viking cards, and in fact, they
are my favorites. Why? Nice graphic design on the label. It
doesn't take much to please me.

But I do have a theory on rebates-including those from Amazon.com.
Over the years, I have noticed an emerging pattern with rebates. I
submit everything as specified in a timely manner. Then 6-8 weeks
down the line, I get a postcard, saying my submission was late or
incomplete, and they were sorry, but they had no choice but to
reject it. I learned to copy EVERYTHING, keep detailed records,
what I bought, when I mailed the rebate package, just everything to
do with the rebate. So when I get the rejection card, I call the
number that is always included in the fine print, and deny their
assertions and demand payment, documenting who I talked to and
when. I have always gotten it, but in double the time that they
state. In other words, the clock starts again when you complain.

I stongly believe that it is a calculated practice, gambling on the
possibilty that some people will forget about the rebate, others
will accept their assertions, and still others won't inquire. It
happened to me on six successive rebates, from a software rebate
(from Amazon), a Palm organizer rebate, two compact flash card
rebates (one from Amazon), another software rebate from Roxio, and
a printer rebate. All were rejected for various alleged reasons, I
complained on all of them and I was eventually successful in
collecting them all, but I wonder if it's worth it. I am at the
point where I will buy from a different manufacturer or retailer to
avoid a rebate if I can.

Life can be exasperating enough without experiencing the rebate
scam. I am keeping detailed records, and I hope to submit them to
my state's Attorney General's office. But I'd rather be out taking
picture's. God I hate rebates.

A-Eighty: As Qrtan says, a Gem! It's a terrific camera!

Gee-Five: Has great features & image sharpness -- and it's black!
(There! Now I can't be accused of harming newbie camera searches).

Think Twice
My experiences:

Bought a Viking 256 Mb more than 2 years ago and it is still working great. I´ve used it first in a S330, then in my S400 and now in my S1 (tho is not fast enough for the movie mode of the S1).

Same experiences with a 256Mb Sandisk and a 512Mb Kingston. So, I'm a happy camper with all these 3 brands.

Just ordered a 1Gb 45X Transcend (hoping it will work better with the movie mode of the S1), from newegg.com for $113. I'll receive it next week. I'll post the results for those who may be interested.

Hello ppl,

I recently had problems with a 256 Viking CF Card. I would by a
different one, if I were you. Although, it might be possible that I
was miss-fortuned with the damn card.

I was on vacation when the card started giving a "cf card error" on
my Canon G3. I had my backup card, a "Noma 256" from nomatica that
worked just fine... and keeps working.

I've heard that the Transcend cards are also very good.

Hi,

I have a Viking 512Mb CF card + Canon G3 combination and from time to time I do have the "card error" problem. It's been a while since it happened and I am not missing it a single bit. :)

Somebody told me that it is actually linked to Canon G3 having a bit of trouble with cards larger than 256Mb but it could just be speculations.

Anyway, I always shoot in RAW mode and I have a way of fixing this problem. Just make sure that you switch the camera off when you get the error message and delete the image where the question mark icon appears once you switch the camera back on.

All in all, I'd probably look at alternatives when getting a new CF card because the reason I got a Viking was that the price was second to none and I still believe I got a bargain. Nowadays, the price are pretty reasonable wherever you look so I'd say to people to shop around.

the dirt in my yard! Oh well.... Don F.
Dude...

I don't know what's old about the common courtesy of replying to someone's current request for opinions on a CF card...IMHO

so what if the thread was old, Viking is still around, don't think they went out of business...
