Still no firm release date but usually when it appears on that site, the release date is not too far down the road. One of them I'm certain is the G7X Mark III, the other, tough to say. I don't think it's another G9X because we're still inside two years from when the last one was released. So it's either a G5X or a G3X replacement.

I'm ready for a new version of G3X.

Oh please. I have been waiting so long for a G3X mark II. I've even started to give up hope and am starting to look forward to the new G7X Mark III as a consolation if an update to the G3X is never coming.

The top post specifically reference two G-series cameras. I'm looking at Nokishita but am not really sure what I'm looking at, even with automatic translation. Are you seeing some connection to the sx series that I'm missing?

I agree that either a G3X or a G5X successor seems most likely -- either both or one with a G7X III.

I saw on Twitter where Nokisita is identifying the SX70 as the next Canon camera to be released. No specs though.

That explains my confusion -- I don't think I've ever even visited Twitter myself, so I would not have seen this. I did notice in the Nokishita release that in addition to two items identified as G-series cameras, there was a third point-and-shoot with no indication of the series. Perhaps that's the SX70.

Canon Rumors normally does a good job of translating what is on that website.

And my bad for overlooking the other Powershot release, which will make a lot of people happy if it is indeed the SX70. How long has the SX60 been around, since 2014?

I was not really predicting an SX super zoom. Just dreaming. After all this time that is all one is allowed. Course in our minds. They really listen to me!

What changes do we want to see?:

Sensor size?

MP less or

Manual focus

Faster focus

Red dot sight

Better EVF

How much zoom?

What?

Faster lens? OSPDAF, less diffraction, Zoom steps, 15,18,24,28,35,40,85,120,200, 400,600,1200,1500,2000...Warblers, Planets, Balanced Budget, World peace.

I'm quite certain one is G7X 3 is one of them. End of the month, here it comes at photokina
Any predictions about what will change on this one?

There was a rumored spec sheet a few months back that mentioned dual pixel AF, new 24MP 1” Canon-made sensor, and 4k video. Though I bet it will be like the M50 where DPAF is only 1080/60p not 4k. But again, those are only rumors. When it gets closer to release time, more than likely the real specs will show up on Canon Rumors via Nokishita.

The G7x2 is more than 2.5 year old, so I hope for more than just a digic 8...

I am hoping, but not expecting :
  • DPAF
  • better lens coating to avoid ghosting
  • EOS R screen (it is only 5% bigger, so it fits). But keep it tilt.
  • get rid of the mode dial and expo dial. Use the touch screen to trigger the change, and the top multi function dial to perform the change (like eos R)
  • get rid of PASM. Only auto and fv.
  • get rid of unnecessary buttons. Why waste physical interface for menu ?
  • simpler aesthetic

If the G5X is one of them, I wonder what they would change or improve?

It should see the latest updates that SX740 received: Auto-transfer to phone or computer, 4k, DIGIC 8. Probably a newer version of the Sony 1" sensor. I guess the rest will remain mostly unchanged. Perhaps some improvements to the lens.

Now if the SX70 is coming out seems unlikely that they will produce a G3X for a while if ever as they would compete. Possibly they are leaving the 1" big super zoomers to Sony who seem to be inactive on the 1/2.3" side of things apart from the pocket sized stuff.

The big problem is that Panasonic can churn this stuff out cheap and it would be great if the new canon is nearer £300 and if it has decent focusing options I would be tempted to replace the G3X. It is a battle between the dopey inflexible focusing of the G3X but great image quality when it can focus and the much slicker Panasonic FZ82 with its longer reach compensating to some degree.

I hope this new Canon is affordable and does not suffer too much from the pixel count.

One interesting thing I have noticed is that with small sensor cameras where if you zoom in and there is smearing they seem often give much sharper and punchier images at normal viewing sizes. I do wonder if more detail at 100% necessarily gives give a better picture at normal sizes which seems a logical assumption but simplistic and the smearing may actually beef up the overall picture. So I wonder if there is method behind what seems madness to the pixel peeping community in loading these sensors with pixels for a different audience.

No doubt. What they look like at "normal" viewing sizes is the crux of the matter. I still pixel peep just because curious, and there should be SOME room for leeway for moderate crops while maintaining IQ; beyond that though, it has little true use unless printing large.
