I have been researching DAS vs RAID, and now different DAS solutions. I have a Drobo 5D but it is getting long in the tooth and while it has been just fine, more speed would be nice. I have looked at QNAP, Synology (both seem to be more focused on NAS than DAS), Promise Pegasus, and based on multiple bad experiences I have ruled out Lacie.
Just today I discovered Areca ARC-8050T3 Thunderbolt 3 DAS products which got a pretty solid review on Tom's hardware back i nMarch. 2018. (https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/areca-arc-8050t3-thunderbolt-3-das,5376.html). Specifically I am looking at the 6 bay version
What I want is dual drive redundancy, and the ability to swap out drives and increase capacity as opposed to being locked into a certain set of drive specs (make , model and capacity of drive) they way you are with most RAID arrays but is not a limitation with Drobo or I think QNAP
Does anyone here have experience with Areca's products?
My other alternative at this point is to go with a Drobo 5D3.
