Your perfect Fuji?

Wouldn't make much sense to most, but it would be a novelty to see a Fuji devoted to RAW only capture. Simpler menus with no plethora of JPEG settings, fewer buttons and more dependence upon the analog controls. No video to worry about, so no mic or headphone ports, perhaps only a USB data/charging port. Oh, and for those using legacy glass, the thumbwheel could toggle manually selected f stops in the viewfinder corresponding to the observed lens setting for rough EXIF data.

A very clean, even more film-like camera. Of course one can simply shoot RAW and ignore JPEGs and video, which is what I already do.

I'd love this too... something about simplicity and minimalism always ticks a box for me. Yeah, others will say just ignore them, but sometimes a clean design is just that ...clean. No BS. Some people are immune to good design though! :)

Great question!

For me so nearly there already with my X-Pro2s for weddings. They really are beautiful cameras - certainly my favourite cameras over 30 years in the business.

Just add the new sensor and AF from the X-T3, flippy screen so that I can hold it up high more easily. The lockable eyepiece adjustment from the new X-T3 would be a surprisingly big deal for me as I'm forever knocking the current one. I have black tape on them now!

X-Pro 3 with those features in particular would be wonderful, given what's available currently.

This wouldn't bother me at all if it got the size and cost down. I know rangefinder "style" cameras can be even smaller and lighter than what Fuji is putting out, as I have some (full frame no less).

Just give us a pure analog film shooting experience with a digital file, simple as that.

The problem is, I'm sure they have already thought of this, done the market research and probably concluded it was too niche. So we likely won't get one.

Can an external magnifier be attached to the eyepiece?
My perfect Fuji would be an X100 version for stills photographers with stuff removed from the X100F instead of adding more unnecessary stuff.
  • I would get rid of the control ring and go back to a basic focus ring on the lens.
  • Since the X100F is really not pocketable to begin with, I would fir the lens with the clutch mechanism on the 14mm, 16mm, and 23mm with hard stops at minimum focus and infinity plus distance/dof scales on the lens.
  • Remove the front command dial.
  • Remove all the video functionality from the software. X100F video is still only 1080p and not that great tp begin with.
  • Replace the split image in the manual focusing aids with an electronic rangefinder patch for manual focusing with the OVF and get rid of the ERF.
  • And the big one. Get rid of the LCD and enlarge the OVF/EVF to match the size and magnification of the X-T2.
Bill, that is very interesting. Great post. I don't agree with all of it but it is very interesting. Of course no camera maker will ever get rid of video on any camera, nor will any camera maker ever get rid of the screen, but I can tell you are an old-school pro. There are so few of you (us) left.

I doubt if Fuji or anyone else is going to be dumbing down their camera or returning to the basics any more than Fuji already has, and I doubt if Fuji is going to jack too much with their magic solution on the X100 line. They are into refinements now.

I'm new to my X100F and have not shot it too much (a bit in Maryland and Delaware last month, as you can see on that Album) and I will take it with me to Italy in two weeks.

I would love for it to have the same EVF magnification as the XT-2 and I personally don't care about the OVF or that hybrid rangefinder-like view. I used to in the old days. But no more. I actually have a little trouble framing with the OVF on the X100F, but I know it is a greatly loved feature with most people who buy that camera.

The front command dial? It is OK and I guess somewhat useful. Man, you want that thing stripped down!

If you could make your perfect Fujifilm APSC X body, what would it be? My only rule is anything you use in your ultimate camera has to already exist in Fujifilm X bodies (i.e. X100 to X-T3). Also, the GFX is not APSC and no FF cheating. ;)
X-Pro3 - smaller size, less weight, improved EVF. Don't need more features -- there's already too many.

That's a good point. Since the Pro3 is a niche camera to start with it seems to be a platform where stuff could be thrown off. Leica threw all video off the M10 to allow them to get the size down.

So a Pro3 with one additional magnification for the OVF.

Eliminate video so that the heat sink can be made smaller.

Limit the AF-C rate say 4 for CL and 8 for CH which would also allow the heat sink to be smaller.

I assume the new EVF is more energy efficient, if so integrate it.

The one thing I would add in is the electronic first curtain shutter.

Missed this one earlier. Yes. Definitely on all of those. I would be all for it. For reviewing photos you could just do it through the evf. Sometimes removing features, while focusing on making other really good makes for better design.

Take an X-T3 and put it in an X-E3 body. Then add IBIS. Sorry, but I had a Leica M3 a long time ago, and I have a Sony with IBIS now, so a mashup of both, but affordable with nice lenses and controls like Fuji would be my ideal.

Doesn't Nikon make the perfect Fuji? ...........using a Fuji body becomes irrelevant
