We're still without a car so I don't get around much yet (at least to take pictures) except to specific places I need to go by taxi, but I love the panoramic view from our apartment, despite the pollution. Plus we seem to have a stunning sunset every evening, although I haven't really gotten any good ones of that yet. So last night I started taking pictures through this lovely multi-colored, faceted vase just for fun (or maybe out of desperation to start taking pics again!). See what you think:

You really need to look at the full-sized versions, which are at the end of this gallery:

So you all made it! Yeah -- and your dog survived too? LOL

I'm so behind the times with cameras, will have to look up the V1 and see what it's about.

Love the vase -- you are so like me, I do the same thing -- get bored and take pic instead of doing boring work...

Hi Dee,

Yes, we all made it, including the dog. She was born (and rescued) in Ankara, so now she's actually gone entirely around the world; too bad she doesn't have a frequent flyer account! Maybe she could sit with us in the cabin for a change :-)).

I'd have to say that I really love this V1, to the point that I almost haven't pulled out the 717 since I bought it. I guess a big part of it is the fact that it can produce good pics in such a small package -- something I've never had with any other of my many compacts. So since I know I can rely on it, I never bother with the 717, and I always have the V1 in my purse. (That probably won't stop me from buying an 828, though :-))

Yes, I really should have been working, but the vase was so much more fun! I knew when I bought it on the Oregon coast that it would be great for this. Unfortunately, I'll be going back to work for the Turkish Daily News next week, so no more time for things like this. (Although I guess I can still goof off from doing my work at home :-)).

Wow, you got a job already? Did you work for them before? What is your job?

That vase is really something, I'll check your webshots to see if there's a full shot of it. is it glass? Anyway it's very pretty. I have some glasses that are irridescent and I have fun photographing them with the light shining through.

Didn't realize the dog is now "back home." What a story.

Glad you are enjoying the V1, I just read Phil's review of it. I've gotten so used to the EVF on the 707, I think now, that I'd miss it, can you believe that one?

Those shots do pop loudly :-). Great idea.

Yes, I worked at the Turkish Daily News for almost four years when I was here before as Copy Editing Chief. I also used to write about one full-page special for them a month (or whenever the spirit moved me). In many ways it was a terrible place to work (I think a lot of people would never have tolerated the conditions), but it was also the best job I've ever had in my life -- it "was" my life in Ankara, actually, I loved it that much. I didn't really want to go back there this time, however, because I do freelance editing and wanted to work at home (and enjoy myself for a change instead of working 6 days a week, 9 hours a day, for around $500 a month when the exchange rate was good). But they are desperate since one of their two copy editors is leaving (I had from 5-7 working for me when I was there) and although I told them "no," I'm afraid I'll be back at my old desk there next week. My husband has been sure all along that I would give in and go back.

We found our dog wandering the streets of Ankara around six years ago; she had obviously been abandoned and understood Turkish quite well. Now she understands Japanese and English as well :-)).

The vase is really stunning; I found it on the Oregon coast and it was done by a Washington artist named Dan Bergsma. Here are a few pics taken at the gallery:

I know what you mean about the EVF, and the V1's viewfinder isn't very good (plus I find the LCD hard to see in the sun, harder than that of the 717). All in all, though, I just love it. I always refer people to this album of mine for my favorite V1 shots (pardon me if you've seen it already!):

Am so glad you landed somewhere and allready got a job. How do you like it? Oh, the vase is stunning! The V1 is still doing a great job!

You got to post some images of your new surroundings, please!

Hi Greg,

Well, I'm sure happy to stop living out of a suitcase, although none of our belongings have arrived yet due to Turkish bureaucracy so it's almost the same as being on the road. We lived here before for four years, so it's like coming home. I keep running into people I know on the street; in fact, a taxi driver turned around and said, "You used to work at the Turkish Daily News, didn't you?" (turned out he had too but had gotten fired). I almost fell over! Then walking down the street in a residential neighborhood, some car drove by and the driver leaned out and shouted, "Helen!" (my old boss at the newspaper). Yesterday afternoon I took a taxi down to the Embassy, and that evening our apartment building guard asked if I had taken a taxi earlier. I said "yes," and he gave me TL 1 million (about $7.00); turns out the taxi driver felt I had overpaid him and came all the way back to give me the money! It's a pretty small world in this city of 5 million.

I haven't been able to get around too much as of yet (no car or time), so these are the only (snap)shots I have at present:

http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/return_to_ankara

but I'm hoping to take the V1 on more adventures and show everybody how beautiful Turkey is!

So what are you doing now for a camera(s)??
