I took a long look at this photo and tried to come up with something good and bad to say about it, but I don't have much. It doesn't stand out and there is nothing wrong with it. It's ok.

I may have tried to turn her body to camera right, facing the open side of the photo. She's a little too square, in my opinion.

I agree... something just seems a little "off" about her. I think it's just the way she is posed. It makes her look a little strange, and I'm guessing she looks much different than the way she looks in the image (in terms of her facial & body shape).

Actually, I like this shot quite a bit. Your subject is lovely and you have captured her giving a charming half-smile. I think her being "square to the camera" works well especially with her symmetric hairstyle -- her hair almost serves to "frame" her lovely face.

One suggestion is to consider other crop options. I think a square (and somewhat tight) crop would accentuate the factors I find pleasing, noted above. The current crop (to me) is a bit distracting. Showing only the upper half of her bodice seems out of balance. This feeling of "imbalance" is heightened by having her off center with more open space to the right.

But overall, plenty to like here and plenty to work with. Nice job.

My initial response was quite indifferent too.

On closer look I do like her face, she has interesting eyes and the even light from the bounced flash works well.

What doesn't work is the background. I don't think it is adding anything to the portrait but is taking away. The exact same portrait could have had a billion different backgrounds... I'd say this one would have been well down that list unless it has relevance to a roll she has played?

Nitpicking:

The way her hair blends with the black background and the way you shot her from above are my two objections.

I like the lighting, even though it's a bit flat.

Personal:

I like her expression. I have made "working speed" a theme in my own practice, so I'd like to know how many frames you shot before this one?

Hi Charles,

Nice shot, and nice soft light from the bounced flash, looks like you desaturated the background also?

I like it. The DOF is just right (thanks for stopping down a bit) and her expression combined with the subject separation and flat lighting make her look a little bit unconventional-which is probably a good thing for a character actress.

It is definitely not a glamour shot.
