Hello,

After transferring my photos and videos via USB to my computer (either by copying directly from the mounted drive or using the supplied PlayMemories software) I want to delete these files from the camera's memory card.

Until now I've never dared to delete files directly from the file structure, because I though if not done correctly this could confuse the camera's file management.

PlayMemories has "Delete" in the context menu, but it is greyed out, so can't be selected. Why? How can I make it available?

So how can I delete these files via my computer without disconnection the camera from USB (I want to leave the camera on USB for charging) and without turning the camera on (causes unnecessary wear and power consumption) and deleting individually?

(At the moment the quickest way I know for deleting is using Format on the camera, but is this recommended on a daily basis?)

Thank you.

Move files by cut and paste or highlight them all and choose delete. After you reinsert the card in the camera you will have to choose "Repair Database" in the menu to restore the file structure.

I delete from cam every day so I goto review photos in cam and hit menu delete photos all from this date and do it. Simple and non destructive

Maybe there's a good reason, and maybe you don't want to make it available.

You can delete them directly from the card, which is seen as a drive in your computer; but then you'll have to use the camera menu to rebuild the database.

Format daily if you want to. The theoretical 'wear' on the card is negligible.

I have a V not an IV but I assume it is very similar and probably identical on card handling. I find deleting photos on a computer is risky. Usually it asks for a database rebuild but sometimes it just continues. Doing that I've had it get confused some time later and it all goes a bit pear-shaped. These days I just reformat every time I've got the images off the card. If I remember to copy them rather than move them it can save a database rebuild when the camera is turned on.

All my other cameras (Canon/Panasonic/Fuji) I just move files off the card in a card reader and they are happy.

Thank you all, I think I stick with formatting.
Better off and safer. I know that years ago - and things with regards to memory cards might have changed over the years - but it was never advised to either format or allow a computer to format a memory card. Always advised to let the camera do it after you moved the photos off the memory card.
