Now that Panasonic is joining the main battle, along with Canon, Nikon, for FF mirrorless, will Olympus be the only one left behind?

Or will it launch also, and with an incompatible FF to Panasonic?

Where does all this leave m43?

Will the main battles now be fought in FF mirrorless land, and m43 become an afterthought?

I take it you don't travel much?

Was the m4/3 system ever alve? The tiny sensor meant that the system was dead from the very beginning, at least for serious photography.

I travel some.

I have also owned (and mostly still own) the GF1, GH1, GH2, three EM5's, an EM1, and the EM1 Mark 2, along with a billion lenses, including the original 14-45 (which was not bad at all), the 75mm, 45mm, 20mm Mark 1, every flavor of 40-150 and similar, the lousy 45-200, Pana 100-400, 40-150 2.8, and 12-100.

So one can say I'm somewhat invested in the system (though I recently bought a Sony A7riii and a few lenses for maximum IQ).

I know very well how much more mobile a m43 situation is than a FF oine. I also know, however, that the overall load is not that different with a A7riii and 70-300 than an EM1 and a 40-150 or 100-400.

All that is rumour spread by someone. You are just being played.

Where it already is at M43 sensor.

Main battle is among cellphones , that is main market for camera users. These companies are not even playing it (may be sony with their phones ).

For those of us who use both systems, your question sounds strange...

Many like myself are thrilled to have a lens that reaches out to 800mm (in 35mm specs) and weighs just two pounds.

When going M43, I presume you aware the trading off on 2 stops of ISO and DoF. If they are very important to you above everything, M43 is not your choice.

I have GX7 and GX85 (depending on which my wife will use), 12-35 f/2.8 and 45-150 f/4-5.6 (exclude the 300g 7-14 f/4) of a combined weight of 1Kg covering from 24mm to 300mm eq AoV to FF as my standard travelling setup. 500g saving from your 1.5Kg Sony Combo and has a much wider focal length covered? If you talk to Trevor on M43 forum who is very happy with his GM5 along with his G9, he might tell you how size and weight advantage of M43, as well as its flexibility, can be. :-)

Is there a day and night difference in IQ between EM1 vs GX85 or GM5, not at all. Therefore, just a matter on how you pick the component for your purpose and the compromise you are willing to make.

I trust for the average joe like myself, mainly have my camera and gears building up for travelling purpose, will appreciate the overall size and weight plus availability of lenses of M43. If you will not travel on foot walking for hours a day, or been an ex-military that feels good only to carry tons of weight, M43 has 0 value to you.

Pany is rumored to participate into FF war, it also had earlier news that might drop the G and GF line, keeping GH and GX only for a simplier line up (a move to spare room for FF?). It is also a fact that Pany are rushing on to the higher margin pro models GH5, GH5s and G9. Happily it also released the latest GX9 and GF10, as a sign to continue its non flagship lines of product.

UnlIkely M43 will end to-morrow.

Now that Panasonic is joining the main battle,...
Since nothing is known about it, it could be an extremely expensive model designed for the professional video crowd. In that case, it would have zero impact on the M43 sector.

If (and it is a big IF) Olympus follows Panasonic and releases a FF ML, I would expect that their R&D efforts will shift to FF. The m43 system is well stocked with lenses and bodies so that would make sense.

However, Olympus and Panasonic would still continue to produce new m43 cameras and perhaps additional lenses but at a slower pace.

you tell me :-)

Actually, recently it’s been more like every week.

This system has been proclaimed dead multiple times by internet experts, but somehow outlived a few other systems, both smaller and larger.

Make of it what you will, but the trend is pretty clear to me.

Micro 4/3 is here to stay, as much as some people can’t stand the idea alone.

There is no camera system or brand that is not dead according to tons of DPR threads about immediate demise of thing X.

which larger system it outlived?

nikon 1 and Pentax q both are smaller?

other mirrorless are alive and well.

Oh, how quickly people forget. And NX1 was the most advanced APS-C mirrorless camera for a long time even after its demise. Had some pretty sweet lenses as well.

And now people forget it even existed. And it’s been what? Two years?

😂

And how about GXR? That one was ahort lived. Not sure if I can count Pentax effort, since that was apparently more of a one off.

it was quite forgettable so people like me forget.

Given Panasonic's MFT releases over the last year or so (G9, GX9, GH5s, 50-200/f2.8-4, 200/f2.8, 8-18/f2.8-4) it's hard to imagine that they intend to abandon the format.

Serious photographers now use cell phones. Some of the biggest selling pictures to news papers these days were taken with sensors far smaller than M43.
