Hello.

Any information on the possibly upcoming Canon mirrorless camera?

Nikon released tons of rumors so a lot was known before the release.

Looking forward to the Canon entry into the field, any advance semi-reliable rumors?

Do a search. There are literally dozens of threads now, and even DPR has posted a news article about the rumors.

Yes, more rumored info surfaces e.g. https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/

It seems the RF lens sizes are smaller compare to competition, e.g. 24-105/4 IS. The 28-70/2 is a treat. No IBIS? . . .

The rumors on the MM Canon FF are very tantalizing. All kinds of speculation.

Nobody knows if there will be IBIS or not.

Some of the RF lenses have IS, and some folks are jumping to the conclusion that there is no IBIS. However, Olympus makes IS lenses for their EM1 mkii which has 5 axis IBIS. The OLY 12-100 f4 is an excellent example of a lens with IS mated to a body with IBIS which produces better stabilization than either produces separately.

The 28-70 f2 looks really interesting.

Of course, it's all just rumors at this point.

Cheers,

Joe

Yes, I got all that, they came out right after I started looking.

Thank you

Seems to me that if the new mirrorless Canon does not have IBIS they must have hit some technical roadblock with their design or just don't have the tech knowhow yet for an IBIS design. From a competitive standpoint not having IBIS makes no sense.

Canon has been doing IS longer than any company. They originated it. Now all their IS has been lens based. I do not think they lack the technical expertise in any way to add it to the camera body. This simply is a choice. In lens IS will always perform better than body based IS because it is tailored for that exact lens. Also Canon has said in the past that they have purposely left out IS for lenses when trying to get the highest IQ possible, ala 24-70 2.8 DSLR lens.

Personally I would like to see IBIS or just put IS in every lens. Doesn't look like that is going to happen, but it has not been left out due to some inability of Canon to implement it.

That's pure marketing spin. Lens IS can compensate x- and y-axis shifts more, but can't correct for z-rotation, so it's inherently worse from a qualitative perspective. The best is to combine lens and in-body stabilization, which in fact is what most manufacturers nowadays do.

I think that's over-generalizing.

The sensor in the new EOS-R is the same one being used in the 5D IV. That's also what's behind the somewhat low fps. The rest of it looks like bits of the M50 (including most recent DIGIC 8 cpu).

So it doesn't really speak to Canon's "tech knowhow" in a broad sense. It's just not a completely new design from the ground up. It's not a brand new sensor, brand new DIGIC 9 processor, brand new OLED 8mp EVF, etc.

But most importantly, it's also not a $6000 camera either. At $2000 it is pretty targeted in what it's supposed to be. Sure, I wish it had IBIS as well :( But I'll wait until the real reviews come out to make any real judgments.
