D850 now obsolete

You may be right. I was very close to buying one with a grip, I’m glad I didn’t. I ended up purchasing a gently used D5 with 8600 actuations. Hopefully I can get some use out of it before it’s rendered obsolete too.

You heard it here first. Everyone needs to rush out and buy a Z7 to replace their obsolete D850. It's a big heavy dinosaur. Who would want to use an optical viewfinder and see action in real time? You can also shave off like 10 ounces of weight! And you will have the added benefit of growing really muscly hands trying to hold on to the little camera. Clearly you dont want to be accused of "spraying and praying". A much smaller buffer is clearly beneficial to all. Clearly you also don't need to program various AF modes to different buttons, clearly you don't need that much flexibility!

I would be more than happy to take that outdated jurrasic camera off your hands for half of it's value. Better hurry before it's too late and the used market is flooded with antique mirrored cameras🤣🤣🤣🤣
I admit, I was worried that the Z7 would outclass the D850. Those worries are now gone. Pros and enthusiasts will be using the D850 for many years to come. My only hope is that Nikon does not forget about F-mount lenses. I will not switch over to a Nikon MILC model until they offer one that's at least as good as the D850, and they offer native wildlife lenses. No silly adapter for me.

If anything, I think Nikon will sell MORE D850s now.
Actually a good friend of mine, whom also shoots wildlife, sold his D4s ahead of the announcement just in case. The morning after the ML announcement he messaged me saying he had added his name to the waiting list for the D850 at 4 retailers... FWIW

I feel his pain. I sold some gear off ahead of the announcement, figuring the Z7 was the way to go. Silly mistake on my part.

Looking forward to the firesales! Mint Nikon D850 for about 2k, here I come! :-)
$2000???????

Youre kidding right????

More like 200 Zimbabwean dollars if in mint condition and you find the right sucker.
No I am not. I live in the us, not sure about you. Dollars.
oh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ok

Nigerian dollar???
WHY do so many of you believe that a DSLR is now worthless, useless, and a brick now?!

And WHY is "resale value" seemingly MORE important than the value gained from actually USING the gear?!

SHEESH!

Kris,

If he's interested, I can check on Tuesday about availability here in Texas, as I'll be visiting a store for the Z series launch party. They've been PRETTY darn good about getting in D850s, and I've directed several folks to them to buy ones they had in stock.

Also, I can check with another store that NORMALLY doesn't sell the higher-level Nikon bodies. About a month ago, they had a D850 AND an MB-D18 sitting there, that had BEEN sitting there for quite some time. They had ordered one for someone and, for whatever reason, that person didn't purchase it. Maybe one or both are still there, as well.

I think they are kidding :-) If anything, these new Z cameras just made me appreciate my DSLR even more.

xPhoenix,

Perhaps a couple here are kidding, but there are a LOT of people, apparently, that are NOT kidding, and are SERIOUSLY saying that the value a Nikon DSLR just dropped through the floor! It's simply mind boggling, to me.

Thanks for the offer. I will check with him tomorrow! I know he is on a list at the big 2 in NY, Cameta, Unique and I think Allen's as well...

Yeah, some people are freaking out, but I don't think DSLR owners have anything to worry about :-) I admit, I was thinking, OMG, DSLRs will be obsolete once the Z comes out, no point in buying F-mount any more, etc....but I definitely overreacted. Nikon just released a couple of ML cameras that are on par with last generation Sonys. No threat at all to pro bodies, or even D7xxx for that matter.

I see a lot of D810s and some D850s on the used market. More than ever before. I suspect reason is, not many people are hard up for used DSLRs anymore. Last year I sold a few DSLRs, this year not even a response for a new model. Times are tuff for DSLR sellers.

The DSLR mass exodus was in 2016 when a lot of people switched to mirrorless.

In resent years the only people I see using DSLRs are tourist with value DSLRs and kit lenses, and high end pro shooters how do studio work.

You can see from the Z7 that its not aiming to be an exact replacement for the D850 with 1 card slot, the mode dial, etc plus indeed the lenses released so far being an F/4 zoom and F/1.8 primes.

I think Nikon is positioning both the Z6 and Z7 as D750 style camera BUT is changing its focus on lens releases for them. On DSLRs the smaller lens options needed to be more cheaper/lower quality, on the Z-system there seemingly aiming higher in the market because that's the size people want to balance with a camera like this.

Certainly not obsolete. However, one has to question where Nikon's lens innovations and expenditures will be going forward. probably not in the F Mount.

Remember, resources have to be allocated. Which has priority now, Z or F Mount.

That will determine the future of the DSLR system in general.

The low availability of the D850 in of itself indicates that manufacturing volumes are low, compared to previous iterations. Popular + low supply, explains a lot re availability.

The DX and D8XX lines are a go for now, but updates to the lower end models are likely finished. That said, I suspect that the D850 is it for the D8xx line. D6, when it comes, probably the end of the line for the Dx line.

That Nikon put so much excellence into the D850 also makes sense, with the coming of the Z Mount cameras. Nothing to lose, nothing to hold back.

Makes sense, moving with the times.

Of course, I will keep and enjoy my D4 and whatever lenses I have with it, current or future. Superb camera.

But any lenses I buy from now will be able to be used on the F to Z mount adapter, should I need to later on.

Great that Nikon has kept their ethos of maintaining backward compatibility with lenses.

And I will likely sell my D610 and 80-200 2.8 AF-D (which I do not use a lot now) and replace that one with a Z6 and 35 1.8 S at some point.

The new S lenses appear to have superb IQ (and at a very good price for what they are) and that would make a wonderful walk around kit.

Good though that Nikon has kept full compatibility with the Z Mount for the AFS lenses.

LOL! Thank you for the chuckles.

Short answer - no.

My D850 is not obsolete, with Group AF etc - and I have ordered a D7.

Nikon have recently said they intend to introduce some new DSLR's.

What nobody knows is how fast Nikon ML will take off.

In 5 years time if 60% of Nikon sales are ML then after that I do not foresee new Nikon DSLR introductions.

Lenses and bodies tend to drop in second hand value after each new model introduction. A 10 year old D3 is worth 15-25% of launch price in UK dependent on usage.

Some depreciation is inevitable over time though they are always those who often cannot afford the high prices of new high end bodies waiting for second prices to fall to a price they can afford.

As the D850 is rightly regarded as the best all round DSLR ever I foresee continuous high second hand demand.

I'm assuming you meant a Z7 here, but I'm sure others will point it out, most likely.

Which is, IMHO and considering its age and the abilities of newer cameras, quite remarkable, actually!

FIRST-HAND demand is still quite high over here on this side of the Pond, let alone second-hand!

Nice, I am trying to get a second D850 body now, know anywhere I can get a good deal? or you have one for sale for good price? I will be more than happy to over that piece of junk from you so you can move on.

Yeah! And who wants two card slots anyway? Just a waste of space when one card "will do" for your cat and food pictures :P

Youre kidding right????

More like 200 Zimbabwean dollars if in mint condition and you find the right sucker.
I am pretty much using mine now only as a handy device to do XQD to SD card conversion. And holding papers of course.
