I just purchased the A7 III, now what?

Hello,

Do you guys think the following lenses are a good base point?

Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 for everyday use

Sony 85mm 1.8 for portraits

Sony 50mm 1.8 for everyday use also

Thoughts?

Rather than the 50, how about the Samyang AF 35 f/2.8?

Maybe consider a macro? 90 f/2.8 instead of the 85?

You've gotten a lot of good advice so normally I'd say go with what your gut tells you. And I really don't want to throw a wrench in the works. However...

...you've indicated budget constraints (having to sell the Canon equipment) and unless you have other equipment not listed, it appears you've only shot with a standard (f4) zoom. So, unless you're in a rush, why not just use the 28-75 for a while and see what you're lacking - with the f2.8, you'll get decent separation and low-light performance and it won't be terrible for portraits, at least in the short term.

Of course, if you're pretty sure you're going to do a fair amount of portraits, go ahead and get the 85/1.8 - not that expensive and you may regret not having it. Or the 90, as suggested above, though it is a little more expensive.

The one I'm struggling with, given your constraints, is the 50/1.8 - not sure how it adds, right now, to what you want to do, unless you're looking for a really light walk around lens. Sure, it's pretty cheap, but how often are you likely to switch to it when the 28-75 is on your camera? Or vice versa? A lens that never gets used is, ultimately, pretty expensive.

In any case, hope I'm not screwing up your thinking too much. Good luck with your decision.

Not at all, thank you for your advise, I think my first port of call is the 28-75 tamron and maybe a 85mm down the line, I think thats the smartest move.

The Tamron will cover a good range at a reasonable price. If you are going to shoot portraits, then the 85 f1.8 next. Beyond that, you would need to consider what you are shooting and what holes need to be filled in your lineup. Something wider would be my guess. Many to choose from.

What would you suggest as a wide-angle addition to Tamron 28-70? In the same price class preferrably, so no GM lenses.

I have the 16-35 f4.0. It overlaps part of the range of my 24-70 GM, but that way I don't need to switch lenses as frequently.

How wide do you want to go? The 12-24G is a great lens and the 16-35/4 is generally recognized as pretty good. For primes, you have the Voigtlanders 10 and 15 (MF) Samyang 14, Batis 18 and 25, the Loxia 21 (MF), and the FE 28, all reviewed at the link in my first post on this thread.

Samyang have some AF primes for e mount. I treated myself to their AF 24 (£279) but they also do an AF 14 (£550).

A fisheye can be fun, but you don't really need AF...

I currently have only the Samyang 35mm f1.4 fe. So not much direct experience, but here is what I would look at.
Neilpowis

I mainly shoot Travel and Landscape photos,
however as of late I have been getting asked to shoot events and portraits also, I am still a rookie so I need some help in where to go from this purchase.

With that information in mind, Are there any Lens and/or accessories that anybody would recommend? I would say have value in mind, i'm not a millionaire (But you moved to Sony)
Laowa 15mm f/2

Samyang 35mm f/2.8

Sony 55 or 85mm f/1.8 fe

Samyang 135mm f/2.0 (if you can live with manual focus)

Sony 70-300 fe

Regards

In fact, you could just go and browse the lens database for e mount lenses at Dyxum..

I was thinking of a prime somewhere in the 18-22 range. So that it'll be noticeably wider than 28, but not too extreme.
all reviewed at the link in my first post on this thread.
Thank you, that looks like a great resource
