Got offered a trade for my as new 56/1.2 for the FE55. Differen focal length but have no prime for my a7 iii yet and never use the 56 that much. But then again when I did I was always wowed by the quality of that lens and the 55 I can trade for is 3 yrs old. Good trade or not?

I have both. The 55 is obviously not an 85 (equiv to 56 Fuji on APS-C). I will say the 55 zony is a fantastic lens, very small, very sharp. The 56 fuji is also a fantastic 85 equiv. The 55 is probably a tad longer but narrower than the 56 fuji. Weight-wise they will be very close. But again, a 55 and an 85 are different beasts and I can't say you'd be happier with one over the other. I personally like primes and in both ranges so if I didn't have a 50 /55, I'd probably do the trade.

Check out the market values of each on http://bokehmarket.com to see if the values match up.

Three years old is probably not an issue if the 55 is clean and in great shape. Is it a trusted seller?

A new 55 1.8 is wonderful. Who knows what your going to get on trade.

Roll the dice or not. Your move.

Nope!

I have owned the 55mm f/1.8 before and thought it underwhelming. The f/1.4 version of the 50mm and 85mm are another story though.

Strange, I read that the 55 is considered one of the best lenses for the A7 series. Mind, being it small(er) and light(er) than the Fuji 56/1.2 has a big factor too in my decision process since I have no light/small lens for my A7III yet.

I'm in a lot of Sony forums and the 55 is kind of a common area of disagreement. That disagreement is usually between the 55 owners who adore it and the 50 1.4 owners (bigger, bulkier, more expensive, fantastic lens) who will use nothing but the 1.4. Then the Sigma Art fans jump in and say the Sigma wins. In my opinion, a photographer can do very well with any of them, though they will appreciate the 55's size the most.

You might go in a camera shop and try both. I personally love the 55 for what I shoot with it. AF is fast, bokeh is great in most but not all instances. And it's tiny.

Looking at http://bokehmarket.com the used value of the two lenses in your trade is roughly equivalent so I don't think it's a bad deal if the particular 55 you'd get is in good shape. If you are not using the 56 fuji, could make sense.

Of all the sharp Fuji lenses, the 56 is unanimousy praised for sharpness and bokeh. but it also costs much… You would lose much in quality by swapping...

For sure, it's a fantastic 85 equivalent.... but the OP said "and never use the 56 that much" and thus the thread. I have both lenses (56 on x-t2 and 55 on Sony) and love them both. But if the OP needs a "normal" lens and doesn't use the 56 on Fuji, then the 55 is a great little lens (as is the Sony 50 1.4 which is on the table).

Have not been read other posts.

Tne 56 for Fuji is like a 85 mm and the 55 mm for Sony is exactly that no conversion.

If you like the look / field of view of the Fuji it is a bad deal you would need a Sony 85 mm to get what the 56 mm does for Fuji

yeah I know, should've made that clear in the opening post. I know the FL is different, but my most used and most loved lens on the XT2 is the 35/2 so I suppose the 55/1.8 would be pretty good then for keeping the A7III light and small(ish). The Sony 85/1.8 is on my wish list anyway.

I use both systems and I never bought the longer Fuji primes because of the 55/1.8 and the Batis 85/1.8. On the other hand I prefer the 16/1.4 and the 23/1.4 to any focal length equivalent from Sony.

Not sure if this helps, on a high level figure out what you shoot and get the tool that does the job. this could be a lens or external flash or modifiers whatever

My advice is dont obsess with the lens it is just an extension of your eyes.
