Flight training 101 (img)

Mark,

I just found this thread today. I hope you don't mind that I
printed a copy of this picture to show to a friend who is an avid
bird watcher.
I don't mind at all, Phil!
I had already printed out some pages from the
Operation Migration web site for her.
That's a great site.

BTW, I just replied to your last e-mail. Last I heard from one of the "chick parents", the predicted departure for the migration is somewhere around October 15th. I could happen sooner, or later...depending how the birds are behaving and the weather. I have another trip planned for the 11-13. I hope it's not too late.

I didn't think you would mind. I hadn't realized what they were doing with the cranes until I started checking out the web sites last night and then saw this thread. I had thought you were talking about something more like the massive migrations of some birds that people talk about seeing in central Nebraska. I had Carol take the picture and web page printouts to work with her to show our friend. Our friend was aware of the program there.
That's a great site.

The email must be slow tonight. I just checked and it hasn't arrived yet. I'll check again in the morning.

Shall I keep a few fingers, toes, and feathers crossed for you as well? We will be in Clayton from Oct. 3 - 7. It sounds like that would be too early for the migration.

Speaking of massive migrations, we get that at Horicon marsh with the Canada geese. I've never been there during the peak. We have so many CG in the Milwaukee area that you can't walk 2 feet in a county park without getting your shoes full of goose droppings. It seems to be a bit down this year though, and I'm not sure why. Anyway, I'll be going to Horicon this year to see the geese...maybe not as "exotic" as a "whooper", but I'd like to play with some blurred "massive group shots" in flight.
I've never tried those kind of flight shots yet.

OT: I mentioned in the e-mail that my PS7 and ACR was messed up on my computer. I posted an "SOS" message in the retouching forum, and JJMACK (of Oly forum fame) told me to change something in my PS preferences, and it worked. I'm doing the happy crane dance again! LOL!

Thanks, Phil.

Great post, Mark. I had no idea they do something like this.

And you were right - ACR is well worth $100 it costs. I would say a must-have for an E-20 owner. Oly converter really doeasn't even come close - even when good results are possible it takes 10x longer to get there (sometimes with a "choppy" histogramm at the end).

Hello MarkE,

Glad to see a fellow Wisconsonite. I live in Menasha, not far from Appleton. I've never been to Necedah but after seeing your photos will add it to my list of places to go to. Just got back from Hayman Falls. No color at all yet. Looks like it will be a late fall.

I'm not sure where Hayman Falls is. I'll have to check a map tomorrow.

Really? Interesting. Got any idea why?

I'll be in Necedah October 11-13 (Sat.-Mon.). Let me know if you want to meet. I can recommend a good, clean, cheap, and quiet motel to stay at, just 10 minutes from the refuge ($35/night). Another friend may also be joining me. She's a painter.

ACR wins hands down in my book!!!! I never did like Oly's plug-in. ACR is faster and makes it easier for me to get the results I want than Oly's plug-in, ORFSuite, or Bibble. I tried them all and definitely like ACR the best. I still use Bibble to batch convert to 1/4 size jpg proofs for a quick review of my shots, but I use ACR for all my serious conversions.

That is interesting. We were in NE Iowa about a week ago, not far from Priarie du Chien, WI, and we thought the colors were coming earlier than normal this year. It has been extremely dry around here and the trees on the bluffs in particular seemed to be changing color already. Have you had more rain in your part of Wisconsin?

Southeastern Wisconsin has been very dry. We do have trees changing around here. I thought it was the change in length of daylight that begins the process. Do other factors such as temperature changes and precipitation also play a role?

Other factors do play a role in the timing and intensity of fall colors.

Here are links to a couple of sites that offer an explanation.

http://www.cnr.vt.edu/forestupdate/Articles/fallcolors.htm

http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/fallcolr/fallcolr.html

I also remember hearing that the timing can also be affected by factors in the spring that determine when the leaves are formed in the spring. That explanation suggested that the leaves would start changing colors when they have reached a particular age. That made sense to me because I remember seeing photps of trees in Africa near the equator that have green leaves year round but had colored leaves mixed with the green leaves. It seems that in that climate leaves are forming and dying all the time, so there is always a mixture of green and colored leaves.

Fall colors in NE Iowa were a real disappointment last year because we decided to finally spend a long weekend in Clayton during "Leaf Time". We are going up there for a long weekend the same time this year. If the colors turn out to be disapointing again this year, the local merchants might just consider taking up a collection to pay us to stay away in future years. ;-)

MarkE,

Wow that is tempting. I am on vacation that week but am planning on visiting my son in Minneapolis. If my plans change I will let you know.

--Hi Phil,
We just had a good drenching about a week ago. It rained staedy for over 24 hrs. But before that we had a very long drought. I always take vacation this time of the year ( I have 4 weeks off in a row). I was planning on going up into Michigans UP but the lack of color in Central Wisconsin is making me think I might want to wait another week. I always thought the color was affected by the temperature. Still moderately warm here.
