An ideal 3 lens travel kit: Which ones would you choose and why?

It always depends on where you are going but my lightweight kit is:

10-24

35/1.4

50-230

If the place has dark sky then add Rokinon 12/2

10-24 18-55 55-200mm all very or excellent small and light cover from 10 to 200mm FL

10-24 for architecture mainly

I will say what I use now for my travel kit. I travel extensively, up until a few months ago I was flying to different parts of the world. at least three times a month. I also take my kit on motorcycle trips.

I bring the 35mm 1.4, the 14mm, and the 60mm. I love this combination for the size, and for the range it covers, for my type of shooting, and for the image quality.

If you could choose any three Fujinon lenses (including future), listed in the Fujifilm Roadmap for a travel kit for a destination unknown, which ones would they be, and why?

Best regards,
Jon
Assumptions:
  • I am not traveling light --- I got a 25" check-in suit case, 40L backpack, and a computer bag as a personal item
  • This is travel photography; not, necessarily focused on extremes like stealthy street photography
If I'm being really honest on what really handles what I actually do shoot (e.g., snapshots) versus what I like to be saying I shoot, I'd pick:
  1. 16-55 (especially on X-H1)
  2. 50-140
  3. 10-24 (maybe the 8-16/2.8 when it becomes available)
No primes unless I really know I don't need to shoot telephoto.

With a small external flash and a few small modifiers, I can do a lot with f/2.8 zooms. Biggest problem with f/2.8 zooms are size and weight, especially when I need all my bags to fit in the over head rack of a train.

If I have to travel light, then the compromises begin and I can't answer an open ended question like this one with a one size fits all solution.

WTTPLSC (welcome to the proudly lazy shooter's club), Marcos. I'm a zoom shooter as well (and proud of it in spite of being surrounded here by devout prime-ites (scarily similar to prime-ates... hmm).

Ducking as I await incoming missiles and/or other miscellaneous paraphernalia. On a serious note... it's great to have choices, almost all of which are very high in quality. You almost can't go wrong either way.

A normal range zoom like the 18-55, a long zoom like the 55-200 and a bright, short prime like the 23/1.4. The reasons should be obvious.

My current must have lenses are the 16 1.4 and 50-140(with tc), it's the middle ground that gives me a bit of trouble. I tend to bring both the 35 1.4 and either the 23/2 or 18-55 depending on the weather, if I have to pick only one...uft. I love the 35 1.4, I...like the 23, but my dreams of turning my Xpro-1 into an ersatz X100 were not grounded in reality:)

Once the 33 1.0 is out, the choice is very clear, and if I had an XH-1, i'd consider a 90/2, but for any other body, the OIS in the 40-150 makes it a must-have, and the 16 is by far my favorite Fuji lens.

Knowing the passion of the primes first crowd, I figure I should poke fun at my zoom preference to get past responses telling me how I'm missing out on the wonders of primes. ;)

It is good to go over all the responses to get a feel for how many photographers can travel with mostly primes vs. zooms.

Yup. I had so much fun shooting with the knobs/rings of the X100S, when I started building my Fujifilm lens collection, four of my first six lenses were primes. I own more Fujifilm primes than zooms today.

But, if I can't take the extra time to focus on my photography, such as sight seeing with family/friends, I am reminded how happy I am about how good the Fujifilm zoom choices are.

That's almost exactly where I am, although I would slip in the 10-24 for 'normal' travel (great for interiors) or the 14/2.8 for hiking.

I also recently bought the 50-230II, agree it is very good given it's weight and range.

My ideal travel kit is the 10-24 and 18-135. It's compact enough for me and i think they are 2 great lenses especially while travelling.

Complement it with one fast prime for low light conditions. For me it's the 18 f2 because i like to shoot wide, and because it's so small.
