Many reported issues with updating A7RIII firmware, so be aware

That's how to do it, follow the instructions! :-) I have updated many Sony cameras. Had issues only once (A7r3), but succeeded at second try.
Produce reliable firmware; "that's really how to do it!" :-) Many, including me, have followed the instructions exactly resulting in temporarily bricking the camera.

I also just did the update to 1.10. It was an update from hell experience. After the first failed attempt the camera showed the red light next to the C4 button. After that it took me 4 more failed attempts, with removing device, switching camera off, removing the battery, and reconnecting the USB before it finally succeeded.

What I did notice is that somewhere during the process the USB connection to the camera on my win10 pc switched from storage to sony device. And I could not remove the usb connection through the 'Safely Remove', but from the 'devices and printers' control panel.
I recently did the 1.10 update to my A7RIII, the same day I received it.

I'd read horror stories about failed Sony firmware flashes, and had a PC motherboard fail during a BIOS flash many years ago, so I was nervous indeed. But I followed the instructions with fanatical care, and everything went smoothly.

Then I allowed myself a deep sigh of relief. :-) I hope I don't have to do that again any time soon--I doubt I'll ever be comfortable with that procedure.
It will take a few years off your life, but I have not heard of any cases where it bricked permanently :-)
That's reassuring. To me, a device isn't truly bricked unless it's permanently destroyed. I don't give up if there's any hope at all. :-)
Exactly. Bricking by definition is permanent. If it ain't permanent then it ain't bricked.

Using the term bricked for a camera that is in no way bricked (just needs a re-run of an incomplete firmware update) is an offshoot of a "chicken little" phenomenon that we seem to see quite a lot of around here.

Unfortunately it is not very assuring to hear from someone, who has done this for years and follows instructions to the letter and still experiences a failure.

I am probably going to sit this A7riii firmware update out. Or is there anything compelling why I should do this?

I believe I am seeing less card reading failures after the update, but they are still there. As an example, I got the message yesterday that Card 1 was not readable and to remove and reinsert it.

I put off doing the A7RIII firmware 1.10 update until today. But I can't get it done. The DriverLoader_1013 utility won't get past Mac Security & Privacy check. There is no permission line to check and let it run, so I'm stuck. Has anyone else had success with this in the past week or so? I may need to run this to work and try it on a Win10 system.

Instead of double clicking try to right click and then open. This will usually override the security/privacy check on a Mac.

Having said this, I also hesitate to upgrade my A7riii firmware. :(

Why bother to upgrade in Mac OS X? Just update the FW in a Windows 10 machine, physical or virtual. Now I only update FW in virtual Windows running in iMac 5K until Apple/Sony completely solve this issue, never have an issue. In addition some FW such as Godox/Flashpoint updates are only available in Windows.

Interesting idea. What virtual Windows 10 do you use on your Mac? It is not free, I assume? I would hate to pay for it if it's only purpose is a simple camera firmware update.

You can run Windows 10 (or whatever version) via Parallels or VMWare Fusion in Mac OS X. It's free in trial version that you can download ISO from

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You don't need to activate Windows 10 to use many functions including run this FW update. I bought all my Mac machines from B&H that included a license of Parallels in the package.

A great advantage of virtual Windows is that you can take snapshots any time and can roll back to original (clean) status in seconds.

THANKS! Sounds like a viable option! Will try this....
