Hi all, been away for a while getting to grips with the S2 Pro, I love it to bits and could never go back to my old Oly E10.

Just the one issue i'm struggling to get to grips with is the WB settings, I always get a yellow colour cast when I hook it up to my Bowens studio lamps, at the moment I am finding the preset 'sunny' the best (i've tried all the others) and attempted manual but got totally mixed up and ended up worse.

It's best illustrated in this gallery http://www.pbase.com/simond/natalie she looks like she has kidney failure :o(

I always went for 6500 K on the E10 and was pretty much bang on but don't know the temperature scale on the S2 and unless i'm mistaken I can't dial it in anyway.

At the moment i'm cheating and adjusting colour balance in Photoshop but at the expense of quality.

I'll keep trying and sure i'll get there in the end, but if someones experience can help i would be most grateful.

Cheers

You really need to learn custom WB to use studio strobes with most digital cameras. Strobes are "around 5500K" which is a close match for the S2 sunny day setting. If you had to use 6500K on the E10, then your strobes are quite cool (blue) or the E10 settings aren't true.

But, simply changing the power level or type of modifier (umbrella, diffuser, softbox) will change the color temp of your strobes. Get a GOOD white (or gray) card and learn to set your own WB. It is a 15 second operation once you are use to it :-)

...should look something similar to this:

Best regards,

Ferenc

P.S.: I used to set my old and trusty E-10 to 6500K, during Flash operation, but the S2 is not exactly the same. The above pic. was shot with the... on-board teeny-weeny-flash with auto WB balance!

The yellow walls don't help. ;-) Do a custom WB.

I thought it was liver failure that turned people yellow. ;-)

1) are you using any filters at all?

2) the sunny setting should work great if that's the color temperature of your flashes. Obviously, that's not the case here.

3) thus, you must do a custom white balance. It's not hard at all, so let's figure out what you mixed up.
4) In brief:
a) turn camera on.
b) press menu button on back.
c) highlight custom wb in menu, then press right arrow key
d) choose custom 1 or custom 2
e) make sure your Bowns flash is plugged into pc cord.
f) set camera on manual focus and manual exposure

g) choose aperture/shutter speed which is identical to what you will be shooting (like say, 1/125 and f/8)

h) get a white object, like a piece of matte printing paper or a kodak white card and get it to fill viewfinder. Careful: some "white" objects aren't really white.
i) release shutter. LCD should say "completed"
j) make sure you choose Cus 1 on back. Make sure you switch manual focus back.

Cheers Anthony ;)

Lucky i'm no doctor lol.

all that is listed is how I did it in the manual but i've been using white printer paper, but i'll get some proper Kodak card, just me being a cheapskate I guess :o)

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers for all the other advice too,

Cheers
