Another new worm emerged yesterday and is already being rated as medium to high risk. Iit pretends to be a Microsoft update using the following headers:

notice
network critical update
failure advice
latest internet update
new pack
bug message/advice
latest net patch
newest net upgrade
latest internet security upgrade

How long this is to go on interfering with us is anybodys guess.

I received a couple dozen of the spoofed Microsoft emails this morning!

Hope that you was alert, normally I dont wake up till I have been sitting at my screen for half an hour, so I suppose I was lucky.

I never thought of that, at least the hacker is having trouble with the weather as well then.

What is it like over there Cassandra is it very bad, it looks it from the TV images that we have seen over here.

Terrible shame for all those people that have just started to rebuild after the one four years ago.
Not a single spam or otherwise unsolicited e-mail in my inboxes
this morning. Very unusual! I wonder if the widespread power
outages on the East coast had anything to do with it.

I had approximately 150 of them in my e-mail this morning. I read my mail from a web based e-mail reader, but all the neophytes had better be careful.

Thanks,

3.5 million homes & businesses without power this morning along the East coast. Eleven persons confirmed dead, thousands of homes flooded. Isabel downgraded to a tropical storm now but still moving northward through Pennsylvania and New York. We live in the Midwestern U.S. so it hasn't directly affected us.

Wow, that is destruction!!

We have not heard anything about the dead over here though, it will probably be on the news tonight, so sorry to hear it.

Glad to hear that you don't expect to be affected, shame for the other poor souls though!!

I am sure that I heard about ten days ago that the FBI had caught some teenager for the sobig worm that was going around last time yet this one is supposed to be the same one only more powerful - maybe he got out on bail.

I have my Outlook Express set up so that the preview pane does not open until I click on the email. And I NEVER open attachments, even if they appear to come from someone I know. All those emails are gone from my system :-)

First thing to do is not open any attachment you think is suspect (e.g. things from people you don't know).

Second, check cnn.com and symantec.com, these are your first line of defense and will have info on the latest viruses.

Don't forward info on viruses "just in case", it just creates vast lists of live email addresses for spammers (in case you were wondering where people get your address, it's from things like forwared virus warnings and people not taking the headers off jokes they're sending ALWAYS use bcc: for those!).

But the 70,000+ viruses for the PC do make me happy of one thing: I have a Mac. Only about 40 viruses and Trojan Horses ever came around for OS 9 or before, and none so far for OS X.

The guy they caught was a clue-less wanna-be hacker who took the original virus and just modified it.

The guy who's really behind the virus is still at large (and probably will forever be).

That kid probably couldn't write a virus if his life depended on it.

I use a free program that looks at your mail while it is still at your provider's mailserver.

There you can delete any suspicious mail already BEFORE it arrives at your own puter.

Works ABOLUTELY great.

surely recomended...:)

Unfortuntely, most of these viruses spoof return e-mail addresses. So, they could be innocent looking attachments, appearing to be from people you do know too.

Unless you are expecting a specific attachment from someone, don't open it.

I've posted this before, but it never hurts to post this info again.

In today's environment, nobody is totally safe from viruses, hackers, etc. However, some protection is much better than none.

Some users believe that they are immune, just because they are careful about opening attachments. Not so.

I've seen other users brag "I've never been infected, because ...."

Chances are, they're helping to spread viruses and don't even know it, if their PC's are unprotected.

I consider these 3 products mandatory for my PC's:
  • ZoneAlarm (protects against "hack attempts", as well as catches programs trying to "phone home). BTW, you are much more vulnerable if you have high speed internet access (I'm using a cable modem). You would probably be surprised at the number of hack attempts you'll see in the security logs after you install this program. Of course, if you don't have a Firewall, you may already have someone using the information on your PC and not know about it.
ZoneAlarm is downloadable from here (I use the free version):

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
  • Spybot Search and Destroy (to remove/guard against Spyware and Adware. It's free, and finds "adware/spyware" that many other packages miss. Before I used Spybot, I used "Ad-aware" -- a product from Lavasoft -- whcih only caught some of these problems (mostly cookies). Spybot Search and Destroy is MUCH better, and you'll be surprised at how much adware/spyware you've got on your PC. I don't think that most people realize how much their privacy is being invaded (or understand the risks involved if you have any "malicious" Spyware on your PC. Fortunately, in most cases this "Spyware/Adware" is only gathering information for marketing purposes, but malicious spyware could "ruin your day" -- if not your life.
Spybot S&D is downloadable free from here:

http://www.safer-networking.org/
  • AVG Antivirus (free version) for Virus Protection. I've got mine setup to download updates every night at 2:00AM, with a full system scan every morning at 4:00AM. It also links with Outlook to automatically scan inbound and outbound e-mail.
AVG Antivirus is downloadable from here:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Of course, no software based firewall is totally safe, and no virus prevention package is perfect. Some users insist on both hardware and software firewalls, for an added measure of security.

There are MANY other very fine products available. These are just a few of the free ones that I use.

The main thing is to recognize the risks associated with PC vulnerability, and to try to take steps to reduce it.
