How do I set my Canon Powershot SX50 to the longest exposure?

Hello,

I'm a beginner with bridge cameras. I was interested in doing some nighttime photography and I've read that, on the SX50, you can get up to 15 seconds of exposure. I've been using the manual setting and I haven't seen a place in the menus to set the length of time for the exposure. But then, it's all very new to me. Does anyone have any advice on how to get the best nighttime shots? (ie starry sky or northern lights, I know there is noise to be expected with this camera but I'd like to try it). Been playing with it for a few days now with not a lot of luck in that area. Did get some GREAT moon shots, though!

Any advice is appreciated, cheers! :)

Solution
To get the longest exposure, set the camera to Shutter Priority (Tv) and rotate the dial on the right side of the LCD to 15 seconds. The camera will do the rest.

Solution
Use the manual setting and start with the lowest aperture around 3.4 with a tripod.

The ISO will default to the lowest setting on the sx50 with any exposure over 1 second if it is like my sx40.

I would start checking the CHDK site for the sx50 download in the near future, with CHDK installed you can really take some nice night pictures because it unlocks some of the limitations the sx series has.

Someone actually down voted this question. Amazing. I hope DPR remove that silly feature. Feel free to share you moon shots, Angela :)

northern lights last summer with chdk and the sx40.

Here's my favourite moon shot so far. I've since found that I can zoom in even further with other settings, but this was one of my first shots taken with this camera and I was very impressed!

Playing with the HDR settings on the camera - I liked the detail of the sky!

Here's a link to a 30 second HD clip of my mildly annoyed cat. The detail and clarity I found to be actually quite impressive (I'm moving up from a Fuji camera and the videos were consistently terrible, grainy, noisy, etc).

I got this one a couple of nights ago. I actually shot it in daylight. That is why the sky looks blue and not black.

You're quite right! I've also protested in another thread and, guess what?, I've received some down votes :-D !

That looks great, Ken! What was the zoom on that one? I'm still in awe that this camera can capture the details of the craters when I can hardly see that with my own eyes! This thing is like a telescope sometimes!

I was surprised to see that it had been downvoted! I wasn't sure if it meant I should have posted elsewhere in the forum or just a random vote. :p

I shot it at 100X zoom in the Standard Zoom setting. This camera takes some awesome pictures and I am very happy with it.

I gave you an upvote to balance it out. That was uncalled for. Your question was a good reasonable for a new user and that is how people learn.

Nice job Angiea, your cat cracks me up! Get that camera out of my face. Your going to really enjoy the camera the more you use it & learn as I am.

What a great photo and what excellent definition, do you remember what settings you had on your camera?
