Every time someone posts here about a video camera that happens to use a 4/3 sensor, as though it's a stills camera, I wonder if the people actually read the description thoroughly? 4/3 sensors have been used in video cameras for about as long as they've been used in stills cameras.
It has no EVF because these are seldom used by videographers. They prefer articulated screens or separate monitors.
That would explain why all the C series have EVFs, Blackmagic sells a beautiful one for $1500, Zacuto sells one for $2400, and Philip Bloom loves the Zacuto.
I never use the LCD on my C200...
Only the EVF.
I also have an external EVF, for my BMPC.
There are certainly situations where an EVF is preferable in video (news videographers especially use them a lot)dd. Also some people do prefer it. Yet, a recent poll of the members of the videographer group I belong to showed people prefer an articulating LCD or external monitor about 80% of the time. Why? Because if mounted on a tripod, or in a rig, it's easier to view the image.
I'm not surprised at the 80% number. And I wouldn't argue with anyone who shoots that way.
My style is different. I prefer the EVF because it gives me more privacy. My C200 and BMPC attract a lot of attention. "Who are you shooting for." "Are you shooting a documentary? etc. And you have to be polite and respond.
So shooting with the EVF gives me some privacy when I'm shooting and when I'm reviewing. (Not that I'm shooting things that anybody couldn't see anyway).
If I have an LCD a crowd can often form watching what I'm doing.
I miss the GH2 form factor because when I shot with them no one even noticed.
But these days I prefer a lot more horsepower for video.
That's the paradox. Having a Ferrari, and not wanting people to notice.
If I want to do focus pull on the C200 I just use my phone.
The C200 has a web app to view video remotely, do focus pulls etc.
If you use the touch screen on a C200 to pull focus it can jar the camera unless you hand hold the LCD or have it mounted elsewhere.
And, as you have noted, external EVFs are available, and preferred by some because they often have better eye relief than those built into certain videocams.
I have a Cineroid EVF that I use with my BMPC.
But external EVFs are big and bulky or super expensive, have to be powered, etc etc etc.
But they do have extra features like waveforms, focus peaking etc. So I can connect to any of my stills cameras HDMI output and get those functions. And waveforms contain soo much more information than a histogram.
I really prefer if a camera, like the C200, has an EVF.
I'm a little disappointed that the new Blackmagic m4/3 4k camera doesn't have one or isn't sold with and EVF only version.
