The Canon 10d was initially sold in Canada for $2500 Can, clearly $400 to $500 more than what you would pay in the US. Now they have dropped the price to be inline with the US. Many of us have bought our cameras in the US for that reason. I bought here for warranty issues (which I find out didn't matter since the warranty is North American). I think they should give a rebate to those who loyally bought here. They charged us too much for it. For those who think I am whining.... I am.

remind me of the poster on fredmiranda right after the 10D came out. This poster had bought a D60 just the week before - and he SERIOUSLY (NOT A JOKE) wanted and expected Canon to give him a refund....

Har-de-har-har !

I would almost agree. Canon did it all very secretly which isn't right. When new cars come out, you know that there will be a new model year and typically, you can save lots of money on the old model when they are trying to get rid of them in preperation of the new model coming in.

This didn't happen with the D60 and a new and better camera came one day out of the blue for way cheaper. I know I would feel robbed for sure had I just bought a 10D and I think it all boils down to ethics really. Sure in the end its just business and maybe he would never win... but at the same time..... it wouldn't stop me from buying cameras over and over again and returning them as defective units to Canon just to spite them and have them waste a truck load of money when they have to sell them cheaper as refurb units. I do think that both parties can play games and I do belive that Canon did just that with the 10D announcement. They should have rightfully started dropping the price on the D60 in my opinion.

There is a magic phrase called 'consumer confidence' which I think goes along way, and which is lacking now. I sure as heck don't have any respect for Canon at all to tell you the truth. This whole pricing issue, focus issues, and now issues with the flash on the 300D without any sort of explanation is just irresponsible for a company. Lucky for Canon they don't have good competition right now, because tricks like this do tarnish a reputation and cause people to go elsewhere if there is another viable option.

I ended up buying from a large reputable store last week just when the Canadian prices dropped.
$1999 10D
$109 EF 50mm/1.8 lens
$149 2yr extended warrantee.

I could have gotten a better price but these guys have MUCH better policies. 14 day full money back guarantee. 30day full value exchange guarantee.

so basically I'm sured for price drops for 30days... it's not much (okay, it means very very little) but it's the security that comes with buying from a large reputable store.

One more suggestion is to do your research... I think the price drop date was posted on this forum about 2 weeks ago. If you read that thread, you would have known of the price drop.

on a last note, you can't win in everything. Take life as it is... you'll sometimes win, you'll sometimes lose.

Canon is not the only one to do that. Sony changed the price of the PS2 in Europe without any warning and a friend of mine who bought it one month before was quite upset but I was happy to pay £70 less (I believe it was) as were a lot of new customers that the operation brought.

I don't say it's good practice obviously but I don't think there's much to complain about. When you bought the camera, you considered that price was a reasonable deal and you did not have anything less: you had the camera for the money you considered fair.

I just bought myself a 10D as well and if it was to change price, I'd consider myself unlucky of course but eh, that's life ;o)

Canon Europe owes me £800 then....because I bought a D30 for £2000 and now a much better 10D costs only £1200. But I paid £1300 for my 10D four months ago so they actualy owe me another £100.
Sony also owes me £500 because the price of my TV came down after I bought it.

Hey and that guy I bought my house from, owes me £20,000 because the prices of property came down in the last year.....

You get my point ? If you don't want to pay high prices, then don't buy things as soon as they are released. The prices always come down after a while.

.... the Nikon D100 is now selling at below $2200. This is a camera that sells at $200 premium to the 10D in the States.

Hey when D60 was a hot item I could not find one in the US so I ask my friend in Quebec to buy me one from there... You meant the Canadian dealer owed me money now :)

There are so many countries but you only like to compare with the country that have the cheapest prices in the world.................

I think Canadian taxes and many other things are more identical to many European countries than USA.

And I want my 1100 euros back because I payed Kodak DC120 1200 euros and only got 100 euros when I sold it ;-(

Lars, the European system is quite different from Canada. Salaries,Income tax.ect. I know my wife is a Brit. You make more money and things cost more and it works out in the wash.

Alpo, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT OBSOLENCE OR PRICE DROPS. The initial price in the US was $2100 Can$ and in Canada $2500. Now they have dropped the price in Canada to $2100 presumably because Canadians were buying the camera in the US. Remember I am talking about the initial price the end of March. THEY HAVE NOT DROPPED THE PRICE IN THE US SO IT HASN'T THE 10D HASN'T DEVALUED YET.

Not more different then USA.

Why do I read new threads everyday from Canadians complaining because their prices is not the lowest in the world. More threads from Canadians than all others countries together.
Are you whiners like you are in the hockey-rink (LOL)

since beginning of the year, the C$ has increased by about 15% or so relative to the US$. Concidentally, or not, 2100/2500 = 0.84

At the time it was introduced, I think the D10 C$ price was closer to the U$ price then, though still at a premium (sadly, it seems a common penalty for us canucks). however Canon Canada was certainly VERY slow to adjust their prices to be more comparable when the rates changed suddenly earlier this year. On the other hand I've noticed the same thing elsewhere, e.g computers and software bought locally vs direct from US manufacturer online - e.g. Apple, Adobe, etc. When the exchange rate changed suddenly and stayed there many months, nobody was dropping their local prices in any hurry. I for one have been waiting and watching for this adjustment to come from Canon, or else I was going to buy from US...

I paid 2080$ 2 days ago here at Montreal at L.L Lozeau on St-Hubert Street.
