no First Aid kit :) . They can't work, no pay (and often the catch is so bad, not much pay anyway} . This boat had two baskets of small fish. Most of them are migrants from other parts of India.

I spend a lot of time documenting Fishermen and the tough life they lead.

Cheers,

Many thanks for looking and taking the time to comment.

Yup, fishing is becoming a tough business. Most of these wooden boats are owned by businessmen and are no longer owner operated so the crews are not very well looked after with diminishing fish stocks. There is currently a fishing ban until 1 August to give the fish sometime to recover.

The Ban used to cover only the Trawlers but now includes any boat with those "expensive" outboards. Fish is no longer the food for poorer folk.

Kelly , I checked out your Blog and Zenfolio sites. I cover similar activities in my area of North Goa (probably a smaller area than yours).

Oh! I certainly had wondered how folks who appear so modest could afford boats that nice.

The older I get the less I get around. I'm sure you are covering more than I am :-)

Helpful that you specify further on where this photo is taken.

It is basically impossible for people to understand other people's lives. To us, they are lacking so much it is painful to think that they are people such as we are. But, if they migrated from other parts of India, then probably this work represents economic opportunity.

We watched a historical Indian epic night before last, Padmaavat. A beautiful spectacle. But the wealth and customs and power of the rulers of India in the 14th century boggle the mind. The conclusion has the beautiful queen leading 800 women to victory by gloriously burning themselves to death in a mass suicide, a form of sati called jauhar. The film has provoked violence in India, and calls for its being banned both by Muslims and Rajputs. We can only gaze on this distant world in wonder.

And gaze on modern India with equal wonder and incomprehension.

Frank - You judge people too much based on their economic status. What's truly painful for many of us is your overwhelming lack of empathy when you try to comment about people. Other peoples lives, as you say... is a subject your spirit isn't able to connect with. Obvious in your comments. Obvious in your titles.

Yes, Goa is a comparatively rich state. Not often affected by natural, or manmade disasters :)

I do not interact on Forums that often so am not aware of 'personalities' .

I have lived, worked, photographed in many parts of the world. The two lines you quoted do not strike a negative response to me. I might have tried to find a thought other than "painful" but that is probably just me. To some it may be painful.

I do find the over-all world situation, as the father of a 17 year old, very distressing. It hurts me, personally, that I have no answers to the complexities involved (I can see merits to all sides of arguments :( ) . A bit too serious for a photography Forum ;)

Heinlein's theory of a "Common Enemy" or Pogo's "We have met the enemy and he is us" .

Went to check out your gallery, thinking I might see some more photos of fisherman. And in fact there is. One gorgeous photo of a (successful) fisherman and his catch. Beautiful shot!

Ir is distressing, but hasn't it always been ? From what I see in reading history, things were even worse in the past.

Social Media. In the past most people had little(none) of the three. Now it is real time and in your face. I remember having to dig out info on what was going on in the world, Books, telephone calls, contacts. Now, almost all is available in a few minutes at my desk. Why do you think some countries severely limit the flow of information ?

Most people just did not know.
