Hold Out For Possible X-T3, or Buy X-T2 Now?

I’ve owned an X-T1 for four years. It’s the camera that brought me into mirrorless from Nikon APS-C DSLRs, and I’ve been immensely happy with it and the entire system. That said, I’ve been eyeing the better autofocus system in the X-T2 for some time, and had intended on upgrading on the “next cycle” of the X-Tx line. But after the X-H1 announcement it’s unclear when/what that will be now that Fuji’s positioned it as their “flagship” model.

Should I wait six months for Photokina in the Fall, and hang on to my old X-T1 during the spring and summer season when I do my most active shooting, in the hopes Fuji ultimately announces an X-T3? Or should I just go for it with an X-T2 now?

(FWIW, I’m not interested in the bigger, chunkier form factor of the X-H1, or its’s price, so that’s a no-go for me. I’m really hoping Fuji maintains its lines of DSLR-like and rangefinder-style cameras that are more purely stills-oriented.)

There's the question - will the X-E3 be a compelling enough upgrade to want to ditch the X-T2 if you get it now? Can you wait to find out? If you can, that's the practical route (not a path I've been known to take [g]).

I'm glad I'm not in a position to have to weigh this decision. Good luck to you.

Wait a bit.

If the x-t3 is not worth it for you when we know the exact specs, you can likely pick up a x-t2 at a good price.

I will go for XT-2 if I were you. There's a big improvement from XT1 to XT2 and you gonna feel happy about the difference. I just bought my XT2 last month and I am so happy about it. But if you want the latest model on the market and don't mind the waiting, then wait for XT3.

If the X-T1 autofocus isn't doing the job for you, then I'd suggest going ahead and getting the X-T2. But if the X-T1 is working for you, my personal philosophy is not to buy new equipment unless you really need to.

Bear in mind that Fujifilm has a long history of flaky first releases. If you rush to buy a new Fuji model, expect that it'll give you a fair number of problems initially. Many problems will eventually be fixed in firmware, but some might be hardware fixes applied to later units (X-T2 purple flare). It's rumored that the X-T3 will have an all-new sensor -- possibly not even from Sony -- and a new processor chip. What could go wrong?

Right now, I wouldn't recommend buying an X-T2 unless you expect to have a need for it over the next year. And I wouldn't recommend buying an X-T3 for maybe six months after it's been released... unless you're prepared to be a guinea pig.

You might be waiting a while...the X-Pro 2 came out 6-8 months before the XT2 and havn’t seen the XPro3 yet. And, the XT2 is on sale right now...might not lose much if you decide to sell XT2 and upgrade to XT3.

Good luck.

As a fellow, happy X-T1 (and X-E2) user, here’s my take (which is obviously personal):
  • I don’t find focus speed limiting, although faster would be better. I understand its importance for some, but for me it’s less important than (1) my own skills at focus use and composition, (2) sensor performance, and (3) EVF performance.
  • Another stop of range (beyond the X-Trans III (the T2, E3, Pro2, T20, and H1) would start to be interesting, and seems possible if they go BSI in the next sensor. I shoot a lot of contrasty scenes, and I’m not always happy with multiexposure techniques. A couple stops over my T1 would really make it easier to get captures I can post process more easily.
  • I doubt any increase in resolution in the T3 and siblings will be substantial or compelling. For me, the roughly 5 linear pixels for 4 step from II to III (e.g., T1 to T2) was not compelling, and no rumors indicate the new sensor will be much denser (above 32 or so, which would be ~ 3 linear pixels for 2 vs my T1). So this won’t tempt me.
  • A larger, higher resolution, brighter, higher refresh, and/or lower lag EVF would be attractive. I have decided the smaller EVFs (like my E2) are too much of a compromise for me, so all but the Tx and Hx (i.e., no Ex, Txx, Prox, and definitely no A or M or Txxx) are out of my upgrade path. I may eventually convert the E2 to IR or monochrome.
So a higher dynamic range T3 with a better EVF would get my attention. More pixels would make me more interested. At the end of the day, I may end up waiting for a T4, which might give me the meaningful bump I want in sensor and EVF, and perhaps IBIS as well. In the meantime, the T1 is a great camera, and I save my pennies for travel, beer, and lenses rather than cameras.

Who knows, maybe I’ll even aim for a possible future less expensive larger format, like the rumored GF50R. That’d give me the range, pixels, and maybe the bigger EVF: I’d even prefer the 4:3 sensor dimensions (how about multiple aspect ratios a la Panasonic, Fuji?).

I was on the verge of buying an X-T2 last december, but as the rumors of an X-T3 started to surface I decided to wait. I've got a Canon 550d at the moment with my faithful 24mm and 50mm lenses to keep me company. As you can see I don't buy new bodies very often, and the X-T3 is expected to be a substantial improvement (with the pressure of the Sony A7 III they have to make it pop!), so I prefer to wait a while.

The X-T3 should be announced right before Photokina in september.

Personally, I would not buy a new X-T2 right now. But what I would do isn't necessarily what you should do.

Are you a stickler for never touched new cameras? Can't stand to touch used items? I wouldn't buy a new X-T2 at the moment with the strong rumors of a replacement in the fall. I'd get a good deal on a used X-T2 to tide you over for the summer. That way you can sell it for near what you paid for it and get the new X-T2.

Alternatively, you can just hold on to your X-T1 a little longer. Is it not doing something you need? Do you absolutely have to have 24MP over 16? Are you shooting action and need the latest AF?

My X-T1 has been unused now and then. And there was something that frustrated me with the AF system.

Then i noticed the new X-E3 that could be the perfect small camera for my needs. Of some reason it is difficult to buy the new X-E3 in Helsinki. It just does not exist in Finland . X-T2 and X-H1 are available ...

I took X-T1 with me to some places and started to think again. X-T1 is still a good camera and the results are quite good if i compare them with my Canon 6D or 80D images ...

There is no REAL need to upgrade (to X-E3) ! I can carry my 80D + 100-400L in a backpack with X-T1+18-55.

And it is still good for travelling

If X-T3 is announced some day and it is clearly better than X-T1 ... perhaps.

I started SLR photography in 1968, first DSLR was Canon 40D in 2007. Now Fuji X-T1 and the new 80D are my favourites - also 6D for landscapes and portraits

If you have been using your XT1 for four years you sure can wait a few more months :-)

What do you photograph and what lenses do you already have?

Just tested it... much bigger difference with AF than the previous AF boost, which was actually not so long ago.

My 35 1.4 is pretty snappy now, even in lower light. I'm so happy, I thought I would add some pressure on you. :)

My guess is that the X-T3 will not be available until November if we are lucky. Given how the last releases went, if you don't buy on pre-order day, you might wait a month or two for the camera.

Since all the rumors seem to indicate the X-T3 will not have IBIS, the likely improvements of the X-T3 are:

Around 30 MP X-trans sensor, likely with more AF points

New image processor

New/improved AF system

Improved buffering, possibly a major leap here

Major video improvements

Unfortunately, I do not think we will see AF improvements on par with the Sony A7III. I would love to be surprised here, but given Fuji's history on AF, I would guess this will be incremental. Thus, the major improvements will be on the video side of the camera to make it on par with the likely planned X-H2 (again unlikely to see IBIS in the X-T3).

All of this is speculation of course. I would love to see a X-T3 with IBIS and an AF system that surpasses Sony. It is almost a sure thing IBIS won't come. I would live to be shocked on the AF side as this is the one reason why I also own a A7III.

I already own a X-T2. So by buying a X-H1, I made my personal choice: X-Trans III tech coupled with IBIS is good enough for my needs. I can wait another year before going for a X-Trans IV sensor and increased mega pixel count.

Having taken 4500+ shots with my X-H1 on a recent vacation, I am very happy with my choice. IBIS really makes a difference in my keeper rate.

If you are thinking X-T2 and not X-H1, you aren't considering IBIS. If you can easily afford the X-T3 at its full price when it comes out in six months, I would wait for it. The X-T3 is the camera body for the next two to three years. The X-T2 with the latest firmware can do a lot; but, personally i can stick with the X-T1 for six months longer.

If the savings of buying a X-T2 now is very appealing to your budget, buy the X-T2 now. Appreciate the improved controls and the new firmware features.

Used XT2's can be had for less than $1000 barely used in 9+ condition. I'd get one now and wait to see if the XT3 brings enough to warrant an upgrade over the T2. Then you'd be covered over your heavy shooting season and you can flip it after if you want to go with a future T3 and lose very little.

Cheers

Chris

My two H1's have been flawless.

Your most active time to use your camera is sprint/summer which is basically today. X-T3 we all know won't be available until late Fall or Winter. Missing out on all that time worth it? You can buy gear any time, but can't buy back lost time or opportunity.

Your options are
  • Wait for X-T3, you'll miss this sprint/summer shooting, so it will be more 2019 onwards. Can still use the X-T1, you been doing it for years fine.
  • Get X-T2, take awesome sprint/summer photo, and get X-T4 or X-T5 in future. Doubtful X-T3 will make your photos look better, just nicer to have.
  • Get X-T2 now, and X-T3 later. GAS full throttle.
I've been using the X-T1 for 4 years too. But this summer I have plans for Russia, Africa and Europe. Lots of once in a decade opportunity. There is a "need" for a 2nd body, I really want to wait for X-T3, but settled for X-H1.
