Pen-F and just one lens, but which one?

17 F/1.2 for best image quality

or

17F/1.8 best portability

What's the perfect Oly lens for the Pen-F.
That depends completely on what you intend to do.

For me it would be the 12-40/2.8 as that is what spends by far most the most time on my E-P5. Suits me for a travel and general purpose lens, very versatile.

Dave, some will poo poo this, but give some thought to the tiny and useful FL range of the 14-42 EZ pancake zoom.

I find this lens fantastic when I want to go small with my E-M1 MkI .

One lens to do (almost) all, can only be the 12-40, really!

When I travel and take my camera (E-M5 II) with just one lens, it is the 12-40. And when I take more lenses (for instance 20mm, 45mm, 7-14) I more often then not end up still using only the 12-40.

I have the 12-40, I thought it might be a bit BIG on the PEN-F

Yes, it is big, and I first used it on the smaller and lighter E-PL5 then on the E-P5, both with no problems. Later I bought a Panasonic 12-32mm for when I'm feeling a bit weaker.

Usually the E-P5 and lenses are in a small shoulder bag, but often for a quick trip then a small snoot bag holds the E-P5 plus 12-40/2.8 plus one other smaller lens.

Here it is in its E-PL5 days.....

The extra lens here is the Panasonic 45-150mm which sits neatly in the nose of the bag under the camera which is carried in that orientation.

Agreed. My 12-40 Pro stays at home. The EZ is made for the Pen (though I do wish the focal range could be a bit wider).

Other than that, my fav is the 17/1.8

To shoot what?

My 12-100 lives on my E-M1 MkII.

However, with both MkI & MkII I have two smaller options, depending - the 12-50 macro and the 14-42 EZ pancake. Even using my FTs 14-54 gives me another option (slightly smaller /lighter than the 12-100).

Has to be the 12-40 unless you tell us something more about use. I don't have a Pen but, if it can be other than an Oly lens, your options widen a lot.

You don't say what you want to photograph; if it's walking around town taking pictures of people, then the 17 f/1.8 is small and unobtrusive.

It all depends upon what is the perfect focal length for you. I have both the 12mm f/2 since 2011 (the first m4/3 lens I purchased) and the 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro. When I travel, I attach the 12-40mm, the Olympus grip, and forget about other lenses. As a daily shooter, I still love the petite 12mm f/2 (see below).

Even when I have the 12-40mm on my camera, I tend to use it at 12mm a lot. I’m comfortable with that angle of view. I think that’s why I cannot bring myself to sell the 12mm f/2. When I don’t need/want a zoom, that tiny lens is just delicious.

I will probably have both lenses as long as I own m4/3, which may be forever. :-)

I have the older E-P5 since around 2012. My lenses remaining are Panasonic 14/2.5, Oly 17/1.8 and Oly 42/1.8

I used to have the Panasonic 25/1.4 and Sigma 60/2.8

Out of all those, the 17mm prime is glued to my camera since over the past year at least. It's a fantastic lens. It looks and feels great. All metal construction and the image quality is in my mind fantastic (I have Canon L lenses as well and the Oly doesn't fall short in comparison).

If you are a "35mm guy" then the 17/1.8 is a no-brainer. The f1.2 version is in my mind too big and expensive.

Zoom - Panasonic 14-140 mark2

Prime - depends on your favorite focal length but one of these:

Olympus 12/2 or 17/1.8

Panasonic 15/1.7

My says is Pen-F and Oly 17/1.8.

Can't go wrong.

Also there is no 'perfect combination' whatsoever

I like Panny 15 but 17 is just wide enough, to my liking...

I have the 12mm f2, the 300mm f4 and the 14-150 f4-5.6. I'd choose the last as a useful all purpose travel lens. Not too bulky, and sufficiently sharp for me. I think it's as good as my 80's era legacy lenses--Zuiko 28mm, 50mm, 135mm--and far less weight.

Good luck with your choices!
