One lens for a D850?

How about the 20mm f/1.8 for landscape and 24-85 f/3.5-5.6 as a general use lens?
I HIGHLY recommend the 20/1.8 Terrific value and optically excellent-- and light. Check my web page cover for a (low-res) example. Plus it takes standard 77mm filters.

OTOH instead of the 24-85 I would go with the 24-120/4, just make sure you get a good copy. They can be had pretty cheap.

Looks like I could get a D810 + 24-70 f/2.8 non VR version together for about $4200. What would you think about this combo?
Very highly. But you should also think about an UWA prime, that's why I (and others) praise and recommend the 20/1.8G. Both that and the 24-70/2.8G take 77mm filters.

If you were buying a new D850 body, but could only afford one lens to start with and would be shooting mainly landscapes, what would you choose? (My initial thoughts are due to an approximate budget of $1200 after buying the body: Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2, Sigma 24-105 f/4.0 or perhaps a prime). Any thoughts from your own personal experiences would be appreciated!
I find the Tamron 24-70 G2 to be fantastic on my D850, but I did need to use the tap-in console, and had fairly significant variance in adjustment required between 24mm and 70mm (front focusing at one end, back focusing at the other). Adjusted, it's great, and it's way sharper than my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 at f/2.8. The Nikon has a lot of character, and I love it, but sharp it ain't. I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G which is significantly sharper than the 1.4, but I don't want to be carrying everything. I use the 24-70 when I need clarity, and the 50 f/1.4 when I need character.

No adjustments for me on the Tamron 24-70... Maybe I just got lucky... Ugly mug, but a self-portrait at 70mm. Tack sharp.

It’s a good combination. If you can stretch it, I’ll personally go for the D850. Jumped from the D800e and the difference is noticeable. The versatility of the new features trumps the 800e.

Having said that, I’ve started using sigma primes to get the most from the D850, but in all honesty 24-70mm is very versatile and no slouch. The link below is landscape with the D800e and more importantly the 24-70mm exclusively.
