So much potential, yet such a letdown

The Sony RX10 was a great idea from the get-go. A rugged video/still hybrid with a sharp, bright and versatile lens.

Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver on a series of key points.

The build quality is only so-so, with a screen that eventually broke, and an aperture switch that is far from smooth. It is weather-sealed though, but Sonys weathersealing is generally not to be trusted.

Performance is also lacklustre. The lens is pretty sharp and the sensor is good, but it is let down a slow operating camera. Turning on the thing takes several seconds, while zooming is even slower.

The only bright light is the video quality. It delivers great FHD quality, udeable AF and built-in ND-filters that makes it shine for video. But then Sony chose to compromise the thing with a screen that doesnøt swivel and gets halfway covered by the oversized finder.

I wouldn't get this again.

First long zoom I've had that rivals my old Minolta primes for "snap" . Still have lots to learn but enjoying the process!

Well it's a 4 1/2 year old design and at the time it was the best "superzoom" available. The RX10iv is far better in every way. There are a lot of RX10 owners who disagree with your assessment. Maybe you had unreasonable expectations.

Why would you review a dated version of this camera? I would be more interested in you review of the RX10 IV.

I didn't review it. Boissez did.

I'm not sure what you are comparing it with at the SAME PRICE today. As a second hand buy at less than £400 it takes some beating (does anything get close?). Even at it's new price there is no other bridge camera which has such a fast lens and such a good sensor. Sure, it's a bit slow to start and slow to focus and that will be an issue for some, but nothing's perfect.

You also seem to be replying to Boissez not me. Try viewing in threaded view which will help avoid replying to the wrong person.

I have no idea why you are bothering to review a nearly 5 year old camera? Given that this is an area in which technology is still accelerating, it's a bit like reviewing a 5 year old graphics card for your PC and complaining that it can't keep up with modern games at a decent frame rate. It's almost irrelevant

Could be he forgot to post the review 5 years ago? :-)

Yes I am - pretty obviously I would have thought.
It's not obvious in threaded view, which is what I always use. In threaded view I can see who was replying to me at a glance. Flat view can be very confusing since they are listed in order regardless of who you are replying to. In threaded view they are listed in order based on who you are replying to. It also makes sub threads easy to follow. If you use flat view and want to reply to the OP make sure you click on the post you want to reply to first.

Maybe he just bought it or he was happy 5 years ago but has bought better cameras since that make the RX10 seem not so good. Either way I wonder about the motive behind the post.

They're both newbies so give them a break. Arm or leg, your choice. ;-)

Maybe they don't know there's a threaded view option. Which does DPR default to? When I first started posting here there wasn't even a flat view option.

Aren't all the RXs ever issued still being sold as affordable options in the RX100 and RX10 series? Is there any confirmation that any of these Mk I models have been discontinued?

The RX10 Mk I is still 3 in stock more on the way from Amazon UK and sold by them not third party.

Yes but it's still a nearly 5 year old design and sells for a lot less than when introduced.

It's still being sold as new today and if anything, a long term review is more relevant than any other review. To me, the RX10 hasn't aged gracefully compared to other cameras.
