Danny.. You are a master at what you do, so I suspect that whichever lens you use, your work would still be good. However, I found a excellent EF 100-300mm L yesterday, so I purchased it. Will let you know what I think when I get it. Your copy is the FD rather than the EF. Do you know if there is a difference with IQ ?Since you seem serious about it and you certainly won't regret it, here's a small write up I did on the lens in the adapted lens forum here at DPR ........Thanks Danny. I have seen some decent copies of the 100-300 F/5.6 L on ebay from $300-400, and some cheaper ones too with slight haze. I had considered one of them before getting the 300mm F4 L IS, and had I seen your pictures before, I most likely would have purchased one as I prefer zooms over fixed.

I've never had an issue with zoom's vs primes. I can see both sides and as long as the zoom is a darn good one, go for it. There's around a stop difference in light between the F/4 and the F/5.6 and it might mean you have to up the ISO slightly. Depends on how you shoot and where of course. Here it's not an issue and I can still get a lowish ISO and fast shutter speeds on a good day.
BTW, I never stop it down, it's always used wide open.
So I highly recommend that 100-300, very versatile but with superb IQ. Like i say, it's the only zoom lens I've kept and I've had a few of them. It compares well to the 300 F/2.8L and that's saying something ;-)
All the best and be interesting to see what you get, let me know for sure.
Danny.

Superb set! Thanks for sharing.Haven't posted any shots in awhile, so why not
From the estuary and a river I like to shoot at with the Oly E-M10 or the E-M1. Canon FD 500 F/4.5L and the 100-300 F/5.6L
Cormorant blasting through with a feather in its beak
Cormorant with shake rattle and roll
Caspian Tern with an eye on the water
Royal spoonbills off and about
Thirsty oyster catchers
Have a kingfisher or two or five
Cormorant on blast off
I'm out of here
Oyster catcher heading off
Kingfisher hanging around
Cormorant heading off overhead
White faced heron on takeoff
Caspian Tern on the dive
Pied Stilt
Well that's a few anyway.
All the best folks.
Danny.

Yeah Pete, I was thinking the same thing about the first shot as well mate. The darn thing was so close there's no room at the bottom of the shot. Not a lot of cropping in that shot ;-) Put it this way, I can hear the wings as they go past and now and again, I can feel the breeze they make. I LOVE that spot on the riverDanny
I like them all, but I wish the 1st was not so tight in on the cormorant.
Your group KF shot got me wondering whether there is a collective noun for Kingfishers, and I found “clique, concentration, crown, rattle, realm”
I like “concentration” the best
thanks for posting.
Once again a fine demo of your skill with those lenses
Peter

Thanks Ron. Had the E-M1 for a long time mate. It ended up with a stuck mechanical shutter half way over the sensor, so I got a pair of long nosed pliers and ripped it out. So now it's electronic shutter only. Not great for a BIF tracker ;-) but it has it's uses. Never had any issues with Panasonic cameras, so I might head down that path with the next camera .............. a few years off yet though, so that might change ;-)Danny,
Great images as always. When did you get an EM1?

Hey Danny
You can say that again, its been a while. Awesome captures, the oyster catchers and caspian terns.
Are the terns migrants and do they return to the caspian or do they hang around all year long?
Cheers Danny

well that sucks. I guess this is just the first time I have seen you post photos from an EM1.Thanks Ron. Had the E-M1 for a long time mate. All the best Ron and I see a post from you there as well. Looks fascinating, I'll get to it.
