Major issue - A7III and Iphone connectivity not working

Hello guys,

I just bought an FF A7III and to my huge disappointment I cannot connect it wirelessly to my iPhone X.

I followed all steps of the (prety poor) manual, and navigated throught the rather messy software to no avail.

Also I checked tutorials and followed every step, but could not get past the connection screen on wifi, and bluettoth would not be detected at all by the phone.

I’m not sure if this is a Camera defect, or just the fact that I have installed IOS 11.3 in my Phone (the Sony website mentions that the Camera should work with IOS 11.2... but I had already installed 11.3 before I bought the camera...)

So can you guys help me understanding if any of you managed to use wireless functions on IOS 11.3?

If not, does anybody know when Sony will issue an upgrade to Play Memories to make it compatible with IOs 11.3? How fast does Sony usually catches up with Apple software updates?

Thanks a lot,

Miguel

Miguel - I'm sure a fellow A73 owner will be over in due to course, but relax a little... There's no need for the "huge disappointment" just quite yet.

Considering IOS 11.3 itself has issues, I'm not surprised they haven't released an updated play memories app for it yet. The same thing happened when I upgraded my Pixel 2 to the latest Android version, I wasn't able to install play memories until recently. It took a few months in my case. No idea how long it will take for IOS...

Open the "Send to Phone" function on the camera. Choose to select images on the phone. It will display the device SSID and QR code. Open the PlayMemories app on the iPhone. Press the button to scan a QR code. Scan the QR code. This will open a page prompting you to Install a profile on the phone. Click "Allow." Once that's all done, go to your wireless settings on the phone and choose the DIRECT-ILCE-7M3 network. Go back to the app. I just did it myself after reading this.

Edited for clarity.

Like Goya said it should work and I have tried it myself on Iphone 7.

Although what does not work are some of the camera controls such as using Playmemories app to select focus point or pairing it with NFC. Though I could be mistaken but I do believe that on Android phones you can basically tap the camera with NFC enabled phone and it initiates the wifi. On Iphone you have to make wifi connection manually.

I'm running Android 8.0 Oreo on Samsung Note 8 and have not successfully getting the connection to work.

The set up is straight forward, but hangs in 'Connecting...' message whenever I try to establish the connection to A7 III in Playmemories Mobile app. Then after 30s or so, Playmemories Mobile app prompts 'Disconnecting....DIRECT-xxxx:xxxx-7M3'

I've also tried to connect to A7 III's WiFi in the phone WiFi setting first, then open the app, the same issue still exists.

Just wanted to provide an update as I've finally figured out the issue!

When using the A7 III hotspot to transfer photos, make sure to manually turn off Mobile Data. Even with 'Switch to mobile data' option turned off, for some reasons it's still causing the connection to fail with the A7 III hotspot.

Hopefully this tip will help out other Android users who's having the same issue!

Works fine for me iPhone X with latest software just transferred a jpg over

Mine is working fine as well. To maybe simplify the thought process on connecting to the iPhone:

Note: You must have the PlayMemories app installed on the phone.

1. In the a7iii’s Network menu, Select “Send to Smrtphn Func”

2. Choose “Send to Smartphone”

3. “Select on Smartphone”

4. After a few seconds, the camera will display the network ID that you will need to connect to. Using your phone, connect to that network just as you would any WiFi hotspot. Your phone will ask for a password to connect to the camera’s network.

The first time you connect, you will need to either enter the password given by the camera (that’s how I did it), or use the QRS code as mentioned by someone else. Once you connect for the first time, you won’t need to re-enter the password on that phone after that.

5. Once the camera’s LCD screen says “Sharing”, Open the PlayMemories app on your phone and thumbnails should start showing up to allow you to select what pictures you want to transfer to the phone.

It works the same way with my A6300 as well.

Also, I put the “Send to Smrtphn Func” into MyMenu for easier access.

Thanks a lot.

I've done that and it doesn’t work.

Do you have iOS 11.3 on your iPhone?

Regards and thanks again.

We are exactly on the same page despite the different phone hardware and OS.

I hope that Sony takes action quickly.

Thanks for the insight

it works. I have 11.3 and iPhone X.

I am also using an iPhone X on 11.3. Can you go on your phone to General > Profiles and make sure the profile for the camera is listed there?

Damn... that means that there is something wrong with my hardware...

thanks a lot for the info.. I'll contact sony support

It is there!

DIRECT-r7E1:ILCE-7M3

but no connection with the camera...
You might want to try removing the profile and then doing all the steps again, couldn't hurt.

Thanks again Eastvillager,

One question: Did you originally set up the connection using iOS 11.3 or you had a previous iOS at the time?

Thanks again!
