Here is one I shot today , hand held with d500 and 16-80. It was at a community event - some natural light and sb 700. I know it’s not a pro studio shot , but my friend , the father of this young girl , was very happy with it and plans to enlarge it and have it framed . Meanwhile after my older d300, there is a lot to learn with this camera . Initially I was a little overwhelmed with the differences in metering and the different focus modes, but with the guides from Thom Hogan and Steve Perry I am learning slowly but Surely. Since my biggest interest is travel and street photography, i think this camera and lens along with prime 35 1.8 , and the lighter 70-200 f4, along with a lot more reading and practice , should make for some happy photo moments. I really enjoy the forums here and I’ve learned a lot , thanks for all who contribute positive feedback and info . Happy shooting ...

Wonderful image of a beautiful child! :-)

As for the thread title, the D500 is a wonderful general-purpose camera.

"I was led to believe the d500 was no good for anything but birds in flight"

Who led you to believe that?

Clearly, “no good for anything but birds” is complete tosh and drivel. Closer to the truth is that the D500 is simply ‘overkill’ for many subjects (like semi dozing kids). But if it’s the only camera you have to hand then it’s going to do a decent job in competent hands 😉

Clearly, you have competent hands - nice pic 😀

Sorry if this is repetitive but for anybody that uses the latest "better" Nikon bodies this page is great.

For me, the most useful feature is the ability to customize the Pv, Fn1 buttons to different AF modes. Incredibly useful and intuitive.

Thanks to all who have replied and commented . I guess I’d read so many comments about it being a lens for birds and wildlife , I too felt it may be overkill for things like the picture posted here. However the flexibility and control of autofocus , and function buttons plus the great high iso capability is making it all worth while. Indecently shot some snowmobile events and it is indeed a great camera for that . As I get to dive in deeper into the complexities of this camera , and with good advice and information posted on this forum Im hoping my shots wil improve .

Take lots of photos everyone

Hey good humor everyone I knew autocorrect would get me in trouble some day , of course I wanted to say I recently shot some snowmobiles , and trust me at -30 c , I was wearing as much clothes as possible . I will read over posts carefully before I hit submit.

I figured that it would have been the autocorrect Mike and guessed that you intended to use the word "recently" instead, but it sounded really funny with the word "indecently" so I couldn't resist a little leg pull. You took it well and that says a lot about you mate?

I don't get the "overkill" assessment. D500 seems just the opposite.

Now "overkill" is a D5 or a Hassy X1D for that shot....

After reading the comments and with some thought , I agree with you historiansx . This camera is capable for all styles of photography , you need to know how to use it to best achieve the results from either landscape , sports or portrait . The more I practice and delve into the depths of this camera , the happier I am . Yes I know it’s not an 850 , but for what I do I don’t need that . This camera gives me a great all around machine capable of handling anything I can use it for. I choose this body also because I have been using a 300s since it’s introduction and was so happy with its build quality , the 500 is all that , great ergonomics and more plus adding the high iso ability and fantastic autofocus..I’m going to be taking way more, pics. The D300s still has a place in my kit , it can still produce some very nice images .

cheers

Mike

It's pretty widely understood that the D500 is perfectly fine as a general purpose DX camera, but so is a 7200 for much less money. With the D500, you pay a premium for the advanced AF, high frame rate and huge buffer. It's certainly worth the money if you need the speed for sports or fast-moving wildlife photography. If not, there are less expensive cameras that can get the job done.

You mean ... you get more better features if you pay more money? Isn't that a novel concept! ;-)
