Hi, i have new a7iii from about two weeks. Great camera. Only problem is: camera is "freezing" 2 times, the LCD screen was block and the screen has locked and the settings have reset.

Someone has got same problems?

I think that a firmware upgrade can resolve this problem

is there a firmware upgrade available for the a7iii?

can you identify anything in common, when the camera froze both times? like using an adapter when it happened? etc.

I’ve also experienced this. The second time was a few moments ago.

On both occasions it’s been shortly after I turned on the camera. Both times were using the FE85 1.8 and writing to a SanDisk 64gb 280 mb/s Uhs-ii card. Both times were while using focus check.

The evf/lcd go black, the red memory card light stays lit, then it sounds as though the camera turns itself off and on, and as OP noted, any settings changed since the camera was first turned on will be reset.

I had this happen a few times on my a7r3. I was using an old 28-80 EF zoom lens on a Metabones iv with continuous AF. I just figured that that particular lens and adapter do not work well with my camera in continuous AF. And I moved on.

If I was using an old lens via an adaptor and didn’t have a wedding to shoot at the weekend I’d probably be similarly inclined to shrug my shoulders and move on 👍🏻

Will be interesting to see whether any other people report the same experience. Hopefully if they do Sony will look into it and release a firmware fix 🙏🏻

If any of the new A7iii owners care to test this out, I can get mine to freeze fairly reliably by shooting consecutive shots (not in burst mode) while using focus check (always on the FE85 1.8, the only Sony lens I currently own).

Seems to happen at least once, at random, in roughly every 40-50 shots or so. I’ve tried two different memory cards (albeit both SanDisk UHS-II 64gb), with the e-front curtain on and off, in AF-S and AF-A modes and experienced the same issue. I appreciate this isn’t exactly real world shooting, but I’m trying to find a way of reliably reproducing the bug so that I can report it to Sony and give them something to work with.

Also, does anyone else experience the shutter firing twice when in single shooting mode as if it’s doing a two shot burst? Have had that happen a few times too for reasons I can’t quite fathom.

Bracketing enabled? Or EFCS off?

Same here, twice so far:

- also shortly after turning on the camera (though I always turn it off to save battery, habit from the old days of smaller batteries)

- also using focus check (AF in zoom mode) in very low light

- same symptoms: black screen, red memory card light

I haven't noticed if the settings are reset, for sure it didn't save the image.

I'm glad others have it, because imho this means probably a firmware issue, rather than hardware one.

On mine it happened with the FE16-35F4.

Same here. I can't reproduce it reliably, but the condition is always the same: AF in zoom mode.

Sony SDXC 64GB Class 10 UHS-II (SF64G) here.

I just got an email from Sony. They told me to remove the battery for a minute.

I took about 150 picture now, and didn't encounter the issue again.

I had the same problem last week whilst on holiday and could only resolve the problem by removing and re-installing the battery.

any ideas what’s wrong and is there a fix or do I return the camera to Sony ?

It's just some bug. Removing the battery and reinstalling it fixed it for me. I hadn't this happening in weeks. No need to return the camera.

The best thing anyone can do is note the settings and what you were doing at the time and try and recreate it, if you see a pattern, give the info to Sony.

I had this issue about 4 times at a wedding I was shooting on the weekend. I’ve removed the battery numerous times since owning this camera and done the firmware update.

lenses were 70-200 gmaster and 85 fe 1.8
How long did you remove the battery? Sony wrote me that I should leave it out at least one minute. I don't know if this makes a difference though.

Hello everyone,

I've had the same problem with my A7III locking up. Screen goes dark, red LED blinks and camera is unresponsive until you take the battery out and reinsert it. Next time it does it I'll note down the settings but Friday night at an event I was shooting it did it 3 times. I called Sony today and they opened up a ticket but said they haven't heard of this before or have had calls about it. If you are having the issue please call them at 1-239-245-6360 and report it so they can see more people are having it and they can look into it more aggressively. I had the A7RIII for a few months and it used to do it sometimes too. Thanks!

Funny you say that as I called Sony today to report the problem and they told me it's the first time they hear of the A7III locking up.
