B&H has A7 iii in stock but not shipping until April 10

I love this forum, it's the same thing as the A7R3 all over again. "I pre-ordered a brand new device with an expected huge demand from a large retailer and I can't believe I have to wait!" "But I ordered it XX minutes after open!" Hmm I wonder how many other people did that?!

Calm down guys, as another post said, you've lived without it until now, a few weeks will be fine. And those with "I need it by XX deadlines", you should have learned from previous releases not to count on such a slim margin...

Just talked to B&H and confirmed they have A7 iii in stock but won't ship until 10th next month.
B&H will be closed for Passover 3/30 - 4/7, but we're open today, 3/29. As long as our warehouse is open, we're shipping. As will all heavily ordered equipment, back-orders are filled oldest first, in the order we received them.

Not sure if it will be the case here, but for things like new release CDs, retailers are usually allowed to ship so that the item is delivered on the release day, rather than shipped on the release day.

As for not paying tax on mail order stuff... I guess that's up to you, but, in most states you're still supposed to declare these non-taxed purchases and pay them locally (with your state income tax, if you have one). B&H sent me a statement for all my non-taxed purchases from them in 2017 so I could include it when doing my taxes.

For what it's worth, my B&H order is Processing and has an "In Stock, Order Sent To Warehouse" status on it. I only put my order in four days ago, so I'm not really holding my breath, but hoping it's a good sign ha.
So how is this possible when someone that ordered within minutes has confirmed his won’t be in the first batch? Something doesn’t sound right.
I did order the camera with kit lens option.

Impossible. I am the only one. The special. The anointed.

It’s difficult. I appreciate your words of wisdom, and I can indeed wait a bit.

But I feel like Calvin and Hobbes on Christmas Eve....

Waiting for their a7iii to arrive.....

Henry, do you have any idea as to an order saying "Processing" that one can speculate that their preorder is being filled to ship?

Below is the status for an order placed 3/14 ... Processing ... heading out of town on the 12th ... fingers crossed it arrives on the 11th w/next day air shipping :-)

I think the “Will begin shipping 2018-04-10” is just when they will start shipping the a7iii’s, starting with the first orders. I completed my preorder within one minute of the time it went up for preorder, but I’m not counting on getting it in the first batch. I think it probably will be, but there’s no guarantee so I’m not worrying too much about it.

Yep, that’s how mine is. Hopefully it’s an indication of being shipped out in the first batch.

Bummer! My kit lens combo is still just backordered!

Mine says backordered as well, and I ordered mine within the first minute. I wouldn't read too much into it, my guess is that most that are getting theirs shipped in the first batch probably still say "backordered". If it still says it after the 10th, and if those that ordered 2-3 weeks after I did start getting theirs, then I'll start getting concerned.

Hey guys I apologize in advance for the newbie question but could I get your opinions please. I'm ready to buy the Sony A7 III but I didn't realize what I would be faced with in terms of availability. I have an event I need to cover on April 15 and my old camera is dead (real dead) so it's not as much of a want as a need to get something before the 15th. You all seem to have a lot of experience with these new releases so what would you do in my situation? I would prefer to buy from B&H but it doesn't sound very likely they could get it to me that quickly based on what I'm reading in this thread. Would I be better off trying something like a Best Buy?

Again I apologize for the question because I know you're all anxious to get the camera as well but I need to come up with some type of solution before 4/15.

BTW I'm also buying the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. I shoot sports and will be venturing into some other areas. Feel free to throw in an opinion on the lens if you care to. Thanks!

Try calling Crutchfield.com today and inquiring about their availability.

Rent if no luck securing one ...i've used borrowlens.com in the past to rent lens and gopro's. The a7iii for example is only 93.99 for a three day rental.

This may be impossible to answer but would a body-only order be more likely to ship sooner than a kit order? I don't necessarily need the kit but I was going to get the small 28-70mm as well to give me an additional lens to get started. I'm coming from Nikon and plan to buy all new equipment over the coming months.

Assuming crutchfield doesn’t have any, I’d just start calling online camera retailers and asking. There is a list of certified retailers on Sony’s site.

Otherwise I would head to a Best Buy or local camera store, make friends with the manager and get their thoughts. Get ready to pony up that sales tax !

Thanks guys. As if I didn't have enough to deal with I will also be out of the country until 4/14 so I need to find a place with availability and have it shipped to the venue. And yes I was trying to avoid the sales tax. Lol

So I spoke with a rep at Crutchfield and was told they have 37 ordered from Sony and 32 were backordered. That gives me a chance to be in their first shipment. I placed the order and we'll see what happens. With easy cancellation I can decide how to proceed when we get into the final week. I'm going to talk with some local shops as well just to see what other options may be available but hopefully things work out with Crutchfield.

Thanks again for the feedback.
