Hi,

I am debating b/t the S50 and the Sony v1. The V1 is slightly more expensive but seems to have more features. The S50 seems to have better image quality according to most reviews. The V1 seems to have white balance troubles.

Anyone have any suggestions b/t the 2 cameras, as far as quality of photos and features go. I know I'll end up with a great camera either way, but its a tough call.

Thx.

you are on the Canon forum.....ain't nobody here gonna recommend the sony.....

duh!

Lol, well I just might. I bought my S50 because of a few reasons. First, I have allot of CF cards already. Even though my new Sony TV has a mem. stick slot. 2nd, the S50 has a 100 meter water proof case available right now too. 3rd, I really wanted something smaller than the V-1. I'm used to my S100. The purple fringe thing bothered me but it's really not that bad for my purposes. The one thing I will give to the V-1 is that it takes GREAT videos.(I found out after I bought the S50). Allot better that the s50 I might ad. Someone posted a vid of a rollercoster ride on the Sony forum a few weeks ago. It was almost as good as DV converted to mpeg would be.

Canon S50 & an old S100 with about 4500 pics taken & not one single problem with it. :)

Hi Rapps!

I have been in the same situation as you 2 months ago, and have decided for the S50, because of:
smaller size!!
better colors (subjectively)
sharper picture (except of corners)
support of CF

I really wanted to like the V1, but didn't like the handling, and the pictures I saw on the internet had drap colors and were less detailed and sharp than the pics I saw from the S50.

Of course, the S50 has the soft-corner problem (in some shots), has slower autofocus (especially in darkness), a slower lens with 3x zoom, the flimsy 4-way controller, no support for external flash, no support for add on lenses (CK adapter is a workaraound...)

The choice is yours, both are serious cameras, the V1 a bit more expensive, the S50 a little less "professional"...

I am debating between the S50, S400, and (to a lesser extent) Pentax Optio S4 myself. I know the S50 is not in the same league, but in HK the S50 is only marginally more expensive than a S400. This and the black body are major pluses.

My main concern is portability. I want something that I can carry to anywhere, anytime. A question to S50 users: how do you carry your camera?

how do you carry
your camera?
I keep mine in and carry it in a Tamrac 5208. It fits the S50 perfectly, and it has a substantial belt-loop that I use without concern. There is NO room for anything else, it simply provides a safe means to carry the camera and keep it readily available.

I carry min in the original Canon belt pouch, a bit expensive but with a perfect fit, and holds a spare battery and 2 CF cards too! It's pretty ranproof too.

I bought the S50 for exactly that you reason too, protability and manual control. It doesn't fit into my pockets, but I have it with me almost all time!

I love my S50. No regrets. WRT carrying it around...I have 3 cases of different sizes (each less than $10.00). I take whichever one meets my immediate needs. With that said, if I am going to take a lot of pictures, I empty out a pocket in may pants and and just carry it there. Works out well.

RAPPS,

My vote would be for the S-50, as that's what I've just bought. When I was researching which Camera to buy, I also looked at the V-1 but decided against this very quickly when I actually looked at one in the store.
The V-1 had some significant shortcomings in my view, including:

-- poor ergonomics (if the Flash is extended, it's hard to hold the darn thing with one hand!)

-- poor battery life (the battery provided is too small, and can only be charged in the camera -- very poor design in my view! This is the ONLY battery that can be used in that Camera)

-- Size (it's a bit smaller than the G3, but still too large for my purposes and therefore not as easy to carry).

-- Memory Sticks (locally I find that the Memory Sticks are a lot more expensive than the equivalent size Compact Flash, especially the "Pro" models. I'm a bit annoyed by Sony's arrogant design philosophy, in not adopting a more universal memory format such as CF or SD).

The S-50 has a few problems also (legends flaking off the command dial, easy scratching of the Lucite LCD screen, excessive CA), however I still felt this was the better model.

I've only just received my S-50 so I'm still trying to learn how to use this. I'm not impressed with the results so far, but attribute that to my lack of skill (there's a bit of a learning curve in switching from film to digital).
Anyway, that's my two cents worth. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks for the comments!

The V1 seems bigger in the sense it is a pain to stick in your pocket. It seems like the S50 can slide in much better?

Also what is worrying me most about the S50 compared to the V1:

1. Indoor Shots. It seems that most reviews rave about the V1 in low light situations.

2. Night Shots

3. Overall Image quality

How do you feel the 2 models stack up in those categories?

Nice photos. They appear very nice for indoor shots.

I drop mine into my brief case so that I have it all day. I like that the lens is protected by the sleeve.

I considered the s400, but the feature set of the s45 & s50 won out over the smaller package. The extra 1M made the s50 a winner.

A question to S50 users: how do you carry
your camera?

LENNY,

Great picture! I'd be interested to know which mode this was shot in (Auto / P?), and any other settings (ie: WB for Tungsten / Fluorescent lighting).

My first attempts at taking good pictures with my new S-50 have been rather dismal, however I'm sure this will improve with practise. I'm trying to figure out how to link them to messages (as you've done with this picture). I'm thinking of signing up for pbase or similar, but want to get some decent pictures to post first.
Thanks for your reply.

I shot this one in tv mode (shutter priority) 125/sec. NO flash so I used iso 400 to get a reasonable shutter speed. I use the raw setting and then adjust the wb,saturation, sharpness, contrast to my liking on the pc before I save as a tiff file. I used neat image to clean up the grain from using iso 400 and sharpened it a little in photoshop. The photo editing program that comes with the camera is very good at tackling the red eye that you get when you use flash, and I set the flash to + 1/3 .....I dont usually use iso 400 mostly 50 but I wanted to see how it is ...........Lenny

As regards to night shots - i'm in Sydney at the moment, and have recently been in Singapore, and the night shots I have taken look like they're going to be absolute corkers ... I was stunned with how well they appear on the LCD. I can't actually upload any images here, but when I get home on the 22nd of this month, i'll post some samples here.

Overall image quality is fine IMHO, although it definately took me a while to learn how to get the most out of the S50 in different situations.

I rarely take indoor shots, so can't really help there, but if you up the ISO there shouldn't be much of a problem.

Geds.
