Hi,

Hope any MOD reading this will understand the purpose of this thread, and will see it's genuinely about needed help.

Guys, for those who read my last thread, you know how excited I am for my first Leica.

It's been a 10 year long dream.

But I'm frustrated to say the least.

I already ordered my M8 (it's paid already), and I ordered a used Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 from a seller in Brazil's version of ebay (Mercado Livre).

I was counting on that lens, as it's exactly the only half decent wide-angle M mount lens I can afford.

(BTW, I need WA because of M8's crop factor)

Here's the problem:

I can't afford a new Voigtlander. In Brazil's prices, I simply can't.

I was getting a used lens.

Payment was already being processed by my bank, but the seller played dirty and cheated on me.

Before the transaction was completed (it would be on Monday), he sold the lens to someone else.

Such a dishonest person. Money would enter his bank account on Monday, he could have waited and kept his word!

Right now I have an M8 on my way, and no lens :( :( :(

To make things worse, there's no other used 35mm Voigtlander available in the entire Mercado Livre (Brazil's ebay).

I'm frustrated beyond words... :(

After a 10 years wait, this is really tough, man.

Ordering from ebay is not an option. Can't buy new, and not sure if I trust sellers on ebay either.

So I ask you guys:

This is a respectable Leica community, with people who I'm sure have treated their Leica gear very well.

Anyone here with a nice, used 35mm (or below) Voigtlander to sell?

If you do, please PM me.

It's easy to make a deposit, I have Citibank account.

Again, hope MODs will allow this thread, as I really need help.

Anyone willing to sell, just PM me.

Thanks everyone!

Best regards,
Marcio Napoli

Why is ebay not an option? Something to do with being in Brazil?

You could always play around with the camera and a pinhole lens in the meantime.

I feel relieved for you as CV 35/1.4 lenses have a lot of focus shift which is a problem on digital rangefinders. Been there with my CV 35/1.4 SC. If you're after an affordable 35mm lens, the tiny CV Skopar 35/2.5 has no focus shift and works fine on the M8 i've been told. I have no experience with it though. My favorites are Zeiss 35/2.8 and Leica 35/2.5 at those apertures but they are more expensive than the little Skopar. FWIW.
Best,
LCT

Marcio Im sorry to read this.

There is an option to put R lenses on M with adapter. Elmarit 35mm F2.8 R. Alternatively Summaron 35mm F3.5 in LTM. Both under £300 I don't know how they are in Brasil. Then there's Jupiter 12 LTM 35mm F2.8 approx £70.

Just to avoid misunderstandings, M cameras cannot focus R lenses unless they have live view capabilities which is not the case of the M8.

I have a 35mm Summicron and a 50mm Summilux, both silver. However they are both at home and I don’t get back for 5 weeks.

Is US$369 within your budget? Here is a used Minolta Rokkor-M 28/2.8 on eBay from KEH, a reputable outlet for used photography gear. They say they ship worldwide.

Great little lens indeed but it triggers 35mm instead of 28mm framelines on M cameras.

Hi,

Guys, the past few days have been super busy for me, sorry for not replying back.

I've had no lens offers so far, but I've found a dealer that imports Voigtlander lenses, so that's where I'm buying from.

After a bit of research, there are 2 lenses within my budget:

Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f/2

Voigtlander Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 P II

I can choose one of them.

Everything I read so far says the 28mm Ultron is the better lens, and although it's at the edge of my budget, this is the one I'll get.

Is that a good choice? Any owners can comment a little bit?

Is it better than the 35mm 1.4 classic I was originally buying? (it seems so!)

AFAIK, sharpness seems ok (not Leica standards, but acceptable anyway), and there're focus shift problems just like the 35mm.

Hope that doesn't bother too much in real life use.

Guys, thanks again for all the help.

Best regards,
Marcio Napoli

The Ultron is obviously faster, but the Color-Skopar is a lovely lens, and about half the size of the Ultron.

I have both the VM 28/f2 and 35/f2.5 and really like them both - would certainly recommend either for the price.
Is it better than the 35mm 1.4 classic I was originally buying? (it seems so!)
'Better' is difficult to quantify. The VM 35/f1.4 has distinct rendering that some love and some hate...
AFAIK, sharpness seems ok (not Leica standards, but acceptable anyway), and there're focus shift problems just like the 35mm.
Sharpness with both of the Voigtlanders is exceptional. There is not a 'Leica standard' that is magically sharper than everything else - it varies lens to lens, some are great, some less so.

You won't like my answer but both CV 35/1.4 and 28/2 suffer from focus shift i'm afraid. That of the 28/2 is less pronounced but i returned the lens for this reason so i cannot recommend it sorry. The earlier CV 28/1.9 is said to be a better lens from this viewpoint but i have no experience with it.

I think OP is better off with Skopar 35 f2.5.

Hi,

Wow, I'm reading these replies with huge interest, because the chosen lens will be my only M lens for a long, long time.

I'm aware of the 28mm focus shift issue, but the intention is to shoot mostly at f2 for portraits, and stopped down to f8 for landscapes.

AFAIK, either of these apertures will bypass the focus shift.

Wide open, the Ultron seems to be a better lens (sharper) than both the Skopar and the Nokton, is that right?

Also, on the M8, the 28mm becomes a very usable 37mm, which sounds just perfect for my needs.

Bashir, regarding the Skopar, it's for sure much cheaper.

My pockets would thank me a lot, but is it really a better choice?

Thanks

Best regards,
Marcio Napoli

Marcio, Skopar is well received in IQ department. It is tiny in size. I followed this thread and nearly everybody came out to find an ideal lens for you.Thats the spirit of this forum.

I have a spare M mount Summaron (without eyes) f3.5 which I am happy to send it over to you for as long as you wish to use. Return when you had enough of it so it remain as spare for another person who may need it before buying a "proper" lens.Optically it is clean and scratch free. And its a chrome lens. But you might find it a little too slow.

check out ebay for used cosina ne vogtlander. you can find some good prices

also canon made some thirty five mm and twenty eights. there is an f2 thrity five mint for under five hundred and this lens gets great reviews and several twenty eight f3.5 in the three fifty range. Check out some Russian lenses as well

Hi,

Guys, just a quick and excited update.

Today I picked up my M8.

I met the seller at his place.

We chatted for quite some time, and although I have no lens right now, I spent good 30 minutes shooting with his 50mm f2.

All I can say is WOW.

Just WOW.

I can't remember the last time I felt so in love with a camera.

Probably way back in 2012, when I picked up a Phase One with digital back (the only other dream I had in the photo world, that rivals getting a Leica).

Back to the M8:

I had a bon#r hearing the shutter work, a very different (and lovely) sound compared to DSLRs.

I can spend hours hearing that shutter doing its job, it's nerdgasmic.

Build quality is gorgeous, it looks and feels something from a by gone era, which is just super awesome.

Built oozes quality and signature in a way we don't find anymore in modern cameras, but we all knew that already.

Oh the LCD, I was hoping to be disappointed, I mean, how good can a 2006 LCD be, right?

It's perfectly decent, way better than my digital back's, D2x and D200 LCD, and I could live with those just fine.

I'm really surprised how good the LCD is.

Focusing with the rangefinder (for the first time ever!) was just too easy. It really felt second nature.

And gotta add, coming from 12 years using DSLRs, it's soooooooooooooooo refreshing to see the world, and to focus, in a different way.

I just loved my purchase in every single way.

I always knew I'd love to have a Leica M, but now that I have, I think it's even better than I anticipated.

Only problem is:

I'm looking at a body without lens right now Lol

I still don't have a lens. Lol !

It will be a tough as nails wait until I can put my hands on my Ultron 28 f2 (estimated wait: 45 days... oh boy, that's gonna be tough...)

Just wanted to add a 12 years too late hands on experience.

Really excited!

Best regards,
Marcio Napoli
