Hey there,

I am looking for anyone that has tested or owned the sigma 30mm 1.4 Canon art lens. I will be using it on my canon 80d. I am in need of a wide angle fast prime and I feel this is the best lens for me right now if the IQ is good. I'm not going to spend over double to buy a sigma 35mm art or canon 35mm because my priorities are set on a more telephoto lens at the moment such as the 70-200 f2.8 and I can't be blowing money for 6 new lenses. But I have a gap I need to fill in the 30mm range which is equivalent to 48mm on full frame so it's almost a 50mm lens which is great!

So let me know what you guys think about this lens! I will be using it for full body portraits not upclose, and some indoor shooting as well. The canon 35mm f2 isnt an option because i need all the light i can get from 1.4 on the sigma.

Thanks!

I have the 30mm F1.4 ART. I use it on my Canon 70D. At a equivalent 48mm, it is more of a standard focal length rather than wide angle.

The image quality is as good as any other ART lens. Everything is well corrected and very sharp. Be aware that autofocus might be hit or miss as Sigma reverse engineers Canon's AF protocol. That being said, my copy's AF got better over time, for some strange reason. Don't know why.

Thank you! Glad to hear your copy was sharp!

I used the older version of the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and I really liked the lens and I’m not a fan of the 50mm FF equivalent FOV and that should say something. When I sold my crop sensor frame lenses to upgrade to FF, that was probably the lens I regretted selling the most. That says a lot. You may want to try looking for the older version of the Sigma which will save you money.

I used the old version of the lens and looked very closely at the reviews of the new one. I was reasonably content with the old one for indoor stuff. Outdoor stuff when stopped down to a lesser degree, CA to the edges was significant, as it is with the new one.

Bottom line was that I wasn't willing to pay 2x the price of the old one, although the new one is slightly better i.e. having less vignetting and getting sharper when stopped down.

The Sigmas are really the only game in town for a reasonably wide but very fast AF lens without paying an FF art price. If that's what you need, then go for it. Otherwise the next nearest thing is the Sigma 24 or 35 1.4 at twice the price. IQ is not as crisp on the 30mm, but good enough indoors. And it is still useful on FF if you ever get there, the edge performance is just worse.

That's strange that it got better over time, did you get the USB dock with it to adjust the focus or did it "correct" by itself seemingly?

This is one of the lenses on my wish list but I was thinking of getting the dock with it. Though its gonna be a while before I save up enough for it, maybe a holiday bundle like they were doing last year.

I agree the 48mm equiv FOV is nice on a crop, I find the 50 just a bit too long most of the time for my needs.
