Hello everyone,

Hope you are all well. I have tried the Fujifilm GFX 50S the other day, and it was a love at first sight. The 120mm F4 lens were available at the time of testing, so tried to take some portraits with it. Amazing image quality, tack-sharp, and that color tone.

I was worried about the AF speed, but it seemed ok. It takes a little time for the EVF to turn on, but other than that the speed is ok. Also I use 512GB SDXC cards with my Nikon and Fuji only states max. 256GB is supported, so I was glad to see that the camera worked with 2 x 512GB SDXC without any issues.

I intend to get the 110mm F2 lens, but I could not test it out as it was not available. 120mm F4 is super sharp. Anyone who has both or used both, can you please share your experience. I mainly take natural daylight portraits.

Many thanks.

Here's a head-to-head test with a distant subject.

For portraits, I'd go with the 110/2 because the option for low DOF might useful.

Here's a bokeh test:

Not shown is the 110/2 at f/4. It's a lot better than the 120/4 there in the corners, if cats-eye bokeh is to be avoided.

if you are looking for most shallow DOF and bokeh, get the 110, if you think you might need to get a little closer (or macro) sometimes and want stabilization go with the 120....i don't think you can go wrong with either lens....

i went with the 120 and even at 5.6 it is easy to get one eye out of focus on a tighter portrait....

they both have a place and are both great....that should help with your choice:) enjoy!

Both really nice lenses.

As Paul noted, superior bokeh with the f/2

OIS on the 120 is very impressive.

Since I bought the 110, I rarely use the 120 now FWIW.

Thank you very much for the samples Chris, much appreciated.

I am used to use Nikon D810 with the 105mm F/1.4 E at F/1.4, and I keep the shutter speed at 1/160 minimum to avoid movement blur in photos. GFX has a bigger sensor and more megapixels, and when I tried it with the 120mm, OIS was on and I even took some very sharp images at 1/40. I didn't know OIS was on before and I was pretty impressed. I am wondering if 110mm gives me less keepers because it does not have OIS.

It is about 87mm in terms of 35mm which is a wider FL than the Nikon 105mm I am used to use without VR, but do you think it should be ok with 110mm without OIS?

No - I don't think lack of OIS is an issue - you'll have more challenges keeping the subject in focus at f/2 with the super shallow DOF!

The 110mm lens is one of the best of that FOV I've ever owned - if not the best

If you want about that FOV on the GFX, the Zeiss 135/2 Apo-Sonnar works well on a 33x44 sensor, and has about the same equivalent aperture. It's manual focus only, though.

I'd go with the 110/2 and get a bit closer.

i would like to add that i always shoot handheld and was a little concerned about the lack of IBIS or in lens stabilization with the GFX system, especially with the larger sensor, but i am getting pretty incredible results so far and i mostly shoot the zoom which is not stabilized....the shutter is very smooth, not sure what fuji did there....of course OIS is great but when shooting people i would be more concerned about your subject moving then shutter blur....

Thank you for sharing your experience Paul. I cannot wait to get my GFX and the 110mm F2. Will share my experiences too.

Hi,

I don't think you can make any judgement on image quality on web size images. It is quite OK to use web size images if you plan to publish on Instagram.

But, small web size images can hide a terrible lot of failures. Just to say, I have been shooting with a very good friend on Iceland. I have prepared slide show with some of our images.

One of those images gave a pretty perfect description of the weather when we arrived. but it was not that sharp in "full HD" that I use to present our images. At 4K it was almost OK.

Checking in Photoshop, that image was out of bounds

Manzur, just curious as to whether you tried a D850 before deciding to go for the Fuji GFX 50S?

Just for ref - all of these images were shot for print magazines, with IQ to match

  • Chris,They are all fantastic photos but if you ask me to pick one, which is the one above and you should reupload in weekly photos. This one is worth a poster size.

I have tried D850. Upgrading from D810, and to keep using my lenses, D850 was the best upgrade option for me. However, I didn't like the noise and DR performance improvement over the D810. And because of more resolution, pixel size got smaller and anything over ISO 640 was not to my liking. Maybe I was expecting more, but I realized I need the upgrade to be significant but it will be difficult for a FF sensor camera since the benchmark standard was D810. So I decided to go with Fuji GFX. Also when I tried GFX with default settings, the exposure and metering was much better than what I get with D810. D810 is a great body but the metering maybe a little outdated now. Maybe. I still love it and I will keep it alongside the GFX.

So I was lucky to get the D850 so quickly just after the release but then I sold it a month after.

Manzur you are so right.

Even though sensor development benefits present themselves, nevertheless latest sensor with less MP shows its benefits vs latest sensor with more MP.

As seen in :

D810 36MP vs D850 45MP

GH5s 10MP vs GH5 20MP.

We will see similar when Gfx has 100MP : sure more MP more detail however more noise iso medium to high, less DR higher iso, more "crunchiness" : less smooth tonal transitions gradation, more harsher compared to 50MP Gfx.
