I am in the process of changing to the SONY 7R3 and hoping to continue using my Canon 'L' series lenses. Which is the best the best adapter to buy? Both seem to get good write ups but the MC-11 is cheaper. (I also have a Sigma 50mm f1.4 and a Sigma 150-600mm that I want to keep.)

Curious that no one seems to have a view on this subject or have I asked the wrong question?

There are a limited number of people who have the gear to answer your question. Maybe they are hoping you will find their previous answers to the same question.

I have the Metabones IV and can recommend it, not least because of the large aperture and light absorbing coating that makes using TSE lenses easier.

The Metabones is the better adapter for overall canon lenses. For specifically sigma lenses, the MC-11 has a bit of an edge but the metabones will work as well. With your L lenses, id recommend the metabones but the MC-11 will be better for your two sigma lenses. I am not 100% familiar but you can google the differences specifically.

P.S. the reason you did not get much of a response is that your answer can be researched via google and searching the forums :) Good luck!

adapters have always been a complicated subject, and with the a7riii, i've seen some posts that certain functionality that worked on the a7rii doesn't work with the a7riii?

historically, changes like a new body or new adapter firmware can change af behavior, so it's going to be difficult for people to go out on a limb and give you a firm answer at this point.

you may for instance end up with both adapters, depending on what lens is used, but fwiw, with the a7rii most people have preferred the metabones adapter.

I like the mc-11 on my a9 with the Canon 24-70 2.8 II. It focuses spot on and seems as fast as on my Canon 1dx. I had issues with a previous Canon 100 IS macro but sold the lens before I upgraded the firmware on the mc11

I have the MC-11 and a "King" adapter ($80 but haven't seen it offered for sale anywhere anymore). I had and sold Metabones III and IV. Neither was much better than the King. The King actually works better than the MC-11 on my Sigma 18-35 Canon mount (less focus noise). The Sony adapter will give you eye auto focus which may not be active with other adapters. I would definitely choose the MC-11 over Metabones...I found it new for $149.

I personnaly bought the MC-11 because i have the EF 40mm 2.8 STM. The MC-11 is cheaper and i have read on many forums everything worked fine with that lens and the MC-11. I got it, and unfortunately, with the last firmware update, it does'nt work very well. It seem that It's different from lens to lens (for Canon)...

So now, i really have in mind to get a Metabone adapter because Sigma does not make effort to make the Canon lenses to work. Metabones do...

After that said, if you have Sigma Lens, it will work very well...

I still have to figure it out...

I have both MB4-T and MC-11 adapters. Bought MC-11 about one year ago on special $150 price. I have not owned any Sigma EF-mount Art or Sport lenses yet that could work slightly better with Sigma own MC-11.

With all latest FW updates, they perform similarly on my Canon lenses in most scenarios. However I feel eye-AF on A9 with MB4-T under green mode seems perform slightly better.

My legacy Canon 500L/4.0 IS super-tele lens only works with MB4 under the advanced mode on A9 that CDAF is fast and still can AF under very dim light, and can use all AF points, while MB4 green mode and MC-11 only can use AF points in 1/3 center area under PDAF and unable to lock under very low light.

MB has tripod mount while MC-11 doesn't. I mount this RRS L-bracket on Metabones that works very well (a bit bulky) that 17L TS-E can fully T/S out without bumping with a regular L-bracket mounted on camera body. EF 24-70L/2.8 II is another relative heavy lens without own tripod collar.

Metabones even focusses EF lenses on an A7R1!

I have quite a few Sigma Art lenses and the 150-600mm C together with the mc-11 at the Moment I'm thinking about buying the MB V because the Af seems to be faster on the MB. Also you can choose if you want legacy or native emulation. With the mc-11 and Sigma lenses you are forced in native mode. But overall MC-11 and sigma lenses are quite usable on A7Rii. Can't comment on canon lenses or other bodies though.

Just thought I would share something I recently found out from Metabones. I did not see this information anywhere on their site but on the V adaptor when in green mode there is a little blue light on the adaptor and in advanced mode it is a red light. I found this out when emailing their support team to make certain I knew what the default mode was.

My 70-200 and 24-70 Canon lenses work well with the Metabones V but my 100-400 struggles. From reading the information on their site it appears I need to switch to advanced mode for a longer telephoto. Except for that issue the adaptor works great.

Very interesting!

When your Canon 500L/4.0 mounted to a9 with MB4, did you notice the difference compared to Canon body?
The only Canon DSLR I still own is 1D III. I have not used 500L on A9 in real world yet. But in home test in very dim light (1/60 sec, f4.0 under ISO 51200), 500L still can AF on A9 thru MB4 Advanced mode (CDAF) where 1D III unable. But I don't think such setup will work really well under AF-C for fast tracking.
Do you tested this with MB5?
No. But my understanding is that MB5 basically has no function gain over MB4 except better interface.
I own a Canon 600L/4.0 and is seeking a solution to use it with a9/a7riii
I guess it should have similar performance as 500L, but usually longer FL, less reliable AF performance in general on adapted lenses.

I tried Sigma 500G/4.0 OS Sport (EF mount) via MC-11 adapter on A9 in the pdn PhotoPlus Expo last year and seem work quite well. But I will patiently wait for native FE Sigma 500G/4.0 OS Sport and hope they design from scratch, or rumored Sony FE 200-600 as a replacement for 500L that I will sell by this year I guess.

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to the Sony a7RIII, however, I’m a Canon user and wanted to use my Canon and Sigma Lenses on this amazing new body.

The salesperson at B&H photo suggested the Sigma MC11, according to this person I was set with the Sigma instead of the $434 Metabones.

Unfortunately the MC11 works well with Sigma lenses but in movie mode it doesn’t not allow you all access to focus areas, as well as some focus modes. It was disappointing since it was only $276 including tax.

Today I returned the MC-11 unit, and purchased the Metabones mkv hoping to fully make use of my Canon glasses. If it fails then I’d have reconsider my Sony a7RIII purchase since I’m not ready to part with all my Canon gear. Fingers crossed🤞🏼🤦🏻‍♂️

Did you update your Sigma MC11 to its latest firmware? It was released on 2018.03.07 and I am sure it didn't come with this. I have had great success with the MC11 and Canon glass but I have never used the camera for video so I can't answer how it behaves in that mode. While it isn't as good as the Metabones it did everything I wanted it to do. I found that the MC11 worked perfectly on my Canon 24-70 2.8 II and it seemed to focus just as fast as on my Canon 1dx. Make sure you have the current Metabones firmware which is updated recently too. Be sure to understand the led status of how the metabones works and how you know what mode it is in.

Great results with the Metabones adapter over the MC-11.

Here’s a link to a quick how-to guide;
