I see the Canon G3 X Refurb on the Canon store site for $579. I’m seeing posts online referring to a $539 price and the $549 price in the past. The sale ends March 3. Should I grab it now or should I wait for the price to come down again? Or do you think it will go any lower soon? Like after March 3rd?

Grab it...!!!!

It's a truly awesome camera!!

Price is your decision, but if I was told I could only keep 1 of my cameras (heaven forbid) it would be my G3X..........

I'm waiting. Canon sometimes lowers the price by a good margin on holiday weekends. I don't know how long I will have to wait, but, prior to the intro of the newer model they will also lower the price.

I also had the thought of ordering right before midnight before the sale ends on March 3rd and seeing if the price drops after midnight. If so, cancel and re-order at the lower price.

It was $500 for awhile between Christmas and New Year's. That's the time I've seen the absolute lowest rock bottom prices from Canon so doubtful it will return to that level until that time again.

Ok. Thanks everyone. Don’t wanna wait that long, so I guess I’ll just pull the triggernif the price isn’t gonna drop anytime soon.

You won't be sorry.....that's a wonderful camera..!!

I've always wondered how the G3X performs against a G4/G7X within the same focal range. Both have compromised lens, the G3X to fit such a wide zoom range into a (relatively) small package and the G7/G5X to fit such a fast lens within a small package.

The G3X has a substantial lens housing so there is no reason to believe it is necessarily comprised against a lens primarily designed with a necessity to fold right back in to the body before the optical issues are even thought about. These cameras with lens housings also have far less dust issues posted than the lenses completely collapsing back in to the body and probably around the sensor. It was one of the considerations that made me buy the G1X II.

Well this will definitely be a downgrade from my Nikon D7100 that I just sold, but I just didn't use it enough due to the size and hassle, since I mostly would use it hiking and landscape-y type shots. I think this will be a good, quick and portable solution to just throw in the backpack and go. Or in the car. I may look into a mirror-less 4/3rds or APS-C setup down the road (ie, something Pany or EOS M system). I'll see if I can deal with the 1in sensor, but I do like that fact that I have all the range I need in one lens (albeit with a hit in quality), but I don't shoot a ton in low light, so we'll see.

When you compare the D7100 with the G3X there only seems to be a stop in difference between the 2 and the D7100 is with a prime which always makes comparisons difficult and flatters the ILC. The image comparison was a bit upsetting as the other cameras all came up as something rather nasty called the Apple iPhone X which is rater upsetting and with any ISO you want as long as it is 32 which is really useful to compare like with like. Rub our faces in it or what especially with the CIPA Jan 2018 figures. Buy these cameras whilst you can.

Good luck with the G3X and a difficult camera to evaluate in a return window as it does rather grow on you with time. The focusing modes are limited as with most Canons but the all image one does work from centre out so from my experience so is usable. It does suffer from its small size as one reviewer bless them seemed to get confused with it as it was fixed lens camera and therefore a compact so then why would it not fit in their pockets, whereas the humongous if talented Sony leaves no one in any doubt that is never going to happen. People have posted not realising it was 600mm equivalent because it is so small considering what it does.

I would be interested to hear whether or not you continue to feel as though the G3X is a downgrade from your Nikon, after you have shot with it for a time, especially since the D7100 somehow was less than practical for you to carry and use.

The G3X is a powerful and practical camera. Setting aside theory and specifications, methinks you will experience no deficits in quality or lack of performance in the 1-inch sensor, when it comes down to actually shooting with the G3X.

It is true however, that the G3X at full (600mm equiv) zoom, does struggle a bit to acquire focus in very low light situations. I found that all that's required is a bit of patience to allow the camera to find its way. In most lighting, the G3X focuses just fine.

I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I'm trying to get back to photography being fun and carefree. Like when I first started with a point and shoot. I think the DSLR thing just made things more complicated than I really needed or wanted it to be. The benefits are great, but at the cost of being less impulsive and cumbersome. Looking forward to taking some photos with it (G3X) when it comes in. Also looking forward to the built in wi-fi, in camera editing and uploading to the phone and online. I spend all day doing IT work at my job. The last thing I want to do is spend countless more hours on the computer, editing and sorting through a ton of photos. Although I may occasionally play with the photos on the pc, with this setup I dont have to if I dont want to. All about fun and simplifying things :-).

I never had any problems with low light and my G3X. See attached. It's hand held and shot when it was too dark to see how many barges the push boat was pushing. Take a look at the ISO and the shutter speed. Not too shabby imnsho.

Truth be told, that G3X can be as simplistic or as complex as you want, from moment to moment.

Put the camera in Auto mode, you have 100% point-and-shoot.

Change to any other mode for as much or as little control of shooting as you like.

It's a win-win...!! :-D

Dutch's handhold on the camera is obviously much steadier than mine..!!

I need a steel pole bedded in 3 feet of concrete to hold a camera that steady...!!

Not too bad, I guess, for someone doddering into his dotage. Keep in mind, too, that I was slowly panning to follow the passage of that push boat. In reality it was a d**ned lucky shot.
