Transfer RAW to iMac

Hi,

New to the forums and just acquired a Fuji XT2 camera. I am trying to set up the camera to transfer files to the iMac and have run into a couple of problems. In trying to transfer files to the iMac using a USB connection, the only place I see that there is a connection is in the iPhoto application. It does not show up in the Finder app under devices. I can import JPEG pictures into iPhoto using the USB connection, but if I have a RAW picture or a combination RAW and JPEG picture, it will not import into Photos. Am I missing something in regards to importing photos via the USB connection? If not then is the only way to transfer the pictures to the iMac to directly connect the SD card to the iMac?

The other issue is that RAW files of pictures show up as ***.RAF files, which I think is an Affinity related RAW file? I had done a trial of Affinity photo but that has expired, and wonder if somehow because of this the files are showing up as ***.RAF files. Is this correct and is this a problem if I end up trying to use Adobe or other programs for RAW file conversions to JPEG? If so, what should I do?

Thanks!

Tom

Use Image Capture in the Applications. You can then designate which images to transfer and where you want to store them.

As far as Affinity goes, I do not use it so I can offer no more.

RAF files are the proprietary Fuji RAW format. They are not Affinity files, though I believe Affinity can read them if memory serves.

I'm of the opinion that using a USB connection is a more awkward method of transferring images to a computer (I also use an iMac).

The simplest and most straightforward solution is to get a small card reader that plugs into your USB ports rather than trying to pull the images out of the camera. This is the one I use. It supports the fastest current standards and is quite inexpensive. It should be readily available. You simply plug the card into the reader, then the reader into one of your available USB ports. Then it becomes a fast file transfer operation. Easy peasy.

Thanks, do you know if the Adobe products read Fuji raw files?
Assuming you mean ACR, LR, and/or PS, then yes, Adobe products do read RAF files.

Question.... is there any reason I shouldn't be taking the Sandisk card out and putting it directly into the card slot on my iMac or MB Air, and then accessing and transferring the images? Does the the intermediary step of a card reader provide any benefit or prevent any risk I'm not seeing? Thanks

The SD slot is fine, and in fact will be faster (in theory) than a USB reader.

I use the SD slot in my MBP for this reason.

Be sure to EJECT the SD card from the file menu before physically removing the card when you're done.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it arguing about camera features - go out and capture memories

I used to bring in my photos with LR..but Adobe Raw conversion is pretty soft compared to Capture One or even ON1 photo..which I use both. I only use LR/PS for my personal pictures using the LR CC from Ipad to cloud to my Macpro. But when I do work photos its Capture One and use PS with ON1 for my effects because the raw converter is so much better.

I usually stick in the SD into the SD slot since I have an older MacBook model

If you have a newer one you may have to use a SD card reader compatible with USB-C port

RAF files are Fuji raw files, not Affinity

First time you open them with an application , it remembers it as the default app to open the files with

You can use Get Info on the RAF and change the default app to your app of choice

That's what I've been doing, and been pretty happy with results.

I still wish I could use PS CS6, only because of my comfort level with it.

I've used the SD card slot in my Mac mini for several years. It's wicked fast and hasn't had a problem yet. For belt and suspenders I always lock out the write function when making the upload. As a result, my only problems have occurred when I put the write-protected card back in my camera -- embarrassing.

I think you will that the free Adobe DNG program will convert your RAF files into a suitable .DNG file for processing with the Adobe apps.

Just use the card slot, no reason to complicate things.

RAF is the extension for proprietary Fuji RAW files. You can get the free RAW converter for them on Fuji's website, http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/myfinepix_studio/rfc/

Several tests have pointed to the fact that one of the best raw to jpeg converters for Fuji is in the Camera. Luminar and Picktorial are also alternatives to try.

More info here: https://www.fujivsfuji.com/best-xtrans-raw-converter/

For import just launch Image Capture on your mac. Alternatives can include Photo Mechanic, a pro favorite. It's fast....

Re: Transfer RAW to iMac

I did not read every response (post), hence, it is highly possible someone already posted similar response.

I had Fuji Digital camera. I use Apple (MacBook) and Toshiba laptop running on Windows 7 (upgraded to Win10). I remember installing Fuji software that allowed me to post process and convert RAF to Jpeg. I used the patch cord that came with the camera to transfer files AND also the computer card reader, depending on my mood.

Each computer has default file transfer, for my Mac, it was iPhoto. Your Mac may use photo. I'll refer to iPhoto for convenience. Either one automatically create folder (and sub-folders, depending on your configuration) in "iPhoto Library". You need to configure your Mac to make iPhoto or photo visible in Finder.

You can change the default file transfer or simply close the iPhoto file transfer. You can change the display on what devices to display or hide by configuring the Finder Preferences.

If you are not proficient in using / configuring your Apple, asked someone who is . . . or buy a book on the subject.

Bottom line, if your Fuji was supplied with a CD or DVD, that CD would likely have the Software I mentioned above. I was able to view and edit the RAF file using the Fuji provided software BUT I don't remember if I was able to view the RAF files from iPhoto. You might be able to download Fuji's own converter software. Do a Google search for answer.
READ your camera User's Manual.

Here is a link to FREE Converter - Utility software for many RAW files.

Good luck

When importing RAW+JPEG into Photos, the raw file is included with the jpeg but hidden and the resulting image has a "J" marker in the upper left indicating you are viewing the Jpeg version of the two. Open this image and select "edit". Go to the drop down "image" menu in the upper left and choose "Use raw as original". When done with editing, the resulting image will now display an "R" instead of the "J".
