A7RII B&H trade in value

Where do you live? The safest would be to see if a nearby forum member could inspect it and give you cash.

I'm in the market for a nice A7RII. New York, Boston or ?

I had a good experience selling my a7RII on Craigslist. I had posted photos of the camera from all angles with a screenshot from Rawdigger showing a low shutter count. I had set a price using http://bokehmarket.com/product/480/Sony-A7R-II . After talking to the prospective buyer, I did a quick background check using Google and felt that they were legit(*). We agreed to meet in a public place (inside a restaurant), half way drive for each of us, cash only, they brought their favorite lens to try it out. We ended up talking for 2 hours over coffee.

(*) I had had one flaky inquiry to the ad shortly after I placed it.. I had listed my phone number and checked the box saying text messages were OK. Within a couple minutes of the ad being posted I got a text msg asking if it was still available, that they were interested but to contact their wife who would handle the purchase. It sounded to me like phishing so I texted back to them to have her email me using the Craigslist-generated email address in the listing to continue. I didn't hear anything back from them. I updated the ad to remove my phone number.

Don't trade it in. Sell it on your own. You'll get about 1600.
I agree, B&H will give you far less than market value. I sold mine on eBay last month for $1900 (in mint condition with an extra battery).

I've sold a lot of equipment on eBay, every once in a while you get someone who gets the winning bid then backs out, but if you specify the right restrictions (in particular accept payment via PayPal only) then you're not out the merchandise. Just be scrupulous about describing the condition and providing a comprehensive set of photos.

To set a price I'll look for sold listings on eBay, it's not a perfect science but gives you an idea. Regardless, with something like an A7RII you're going to have to sell it if you want the most money (if you value convenience then there's nothing wrong with trading it in, just realize that comes at a cost). However, the difference between what you could sell an item for and what you'll get via trade in is going to decrease as the value of the item falls. So sell your camera privately, but if you can get hold of a low-cost item (e.g. zoom lens, small mirrorless camera) you can trade it in to B&H and get the same bonus as you would if you traded in your camera. For example, I just checked the trade in value of a Panasonic 45-175 zoom lens, about $150. I doubt I would get a lot more on eBay, so I COULD trade it in and get the additional $500 for an A9. The only issue is that, for example, B&H has an A9 bundle that includes an external disk and case for the same price as the A9 body only, but you'll get the $500 off only if you purchase the body alone.

BTW, I like Adorama and B&H both, but when it comes to these trade in deals I find the latter to be much more "on the ball". I won't bore you with the details but there was a similar promotion going on with Olympus a while back and B&H processed my trade in and I had my purchase in hand before Adorama was even able to give me a quote.

I inquired about trading in my A7RII at B&H and they would not provide any idea of the trade in value until they receive the camera. I know there are a lot of factors involved with trade in value but I am just trying to get a general estimate of what a good condition A7RII is worth to determine if I can swing an A7RIII. Would greatly appreciate if anyone that recently completed a trade in (A7RII) can provide the amount they received.
look at it this way

there used prices are about 5-10% more than private sellers. they usually do at least a 60-80% markup over what the buy the stuff for. so, what they offer you is 30-50% less than what you can get as a private seller (ebay, craigslist, fredmiranda etc). you have to decide if that is worth it to you.

Another in between option is if you have a good relationhsip with your local retailer (if you have one) some will sell your used equipment on consignment. they will put it up and charge 10-20%. you will make more money that way.

I'm so sorry to read that this was your experience....I can only imagine that Adorama's used department had a bigger influx of incoming requests than expected.

The good news is that from next month, Adorama Camera will be offering fully automated quotes online, so that should speed things up a bit.

Helen:

I hesitated to post this (I think we actually discussed it when it happened) but I felt it was only fair to the OP to mention it. I don't need to go into any more specifics.

As I say, I like both of you (in some circumstances I prefer Adorama, in others B&H) but have never questioned Adorama's integrity (which is far and away the most important thing). It's just your web presence may need a bit of "spiffing up" (IMO) in some areas, including used quotes. If you automate them then I see no reason a buyer's experience would be any different at your store than it would be at B&H.

I absolutely agree with you!

The other area we need to get better on is packaging, and finally I'm confident that - from the feedback which I'm getting by email the past couple of days - we are making changes that everyone is going to love.

Still in trial stage, but I'm very excited by what I've seen - I just re-read that....I'm "excited" by packaging.....I need to get out more! :)

Trade in deals are for people who are in a rush ,lost hope, or do not care much about money .They will find the tiniest scratch or excuse to further bring down the price. There is more money profit margins in used products than there ever will be in a brand new one.

If you are not in a hurry then post it somewhere in a classifieds or something, you can bargain a bit and you will lose far less which for that you might add a lens or an accessory..

Good luck

The ultimate "trade-in." Woman drives a 2 year old, $50,000 SUV into a wrecking yard, and scraps it. She got $600.00. Was there anything wrong with it? No. She just didn't like it anymore and didn't want to bother with selling or trading it in.

Why a woman? Guys do the same :)

Have a look at MPB they operate in the UK and are excellent but also have a US operation I understand.

In the UK you send details and condition of your equipment via the web site and get a buy price very quickly.
