Generic MB-D18 battery grip for the D850

It looks like the Vello grip provides 9 fps: https://nikonrumors.com/2018/02/07/...battery-grip-for-nikon-d850.aspx/#more-119520

And I just thought I'd mention - that the little bit of wobble that I noticed with a couple of my generic grips is less of an issue than I initially saw.

I've tried tightening up the grips to the camera, (by turning the dials tighter) and I was NOT able to replicate the card write light going on when I tried torqueing the grip. So I think my initial concerns about possibly developing memory card corruption if the camera loses power for a split second as you are in the middle of writing images to the card are unfounded.

What I would like to know is does the Vello grip have rubber coated wheels like the Nikon or are they plastic like the Mcoplus.

I just received the Vello BGN-19and the wheels feel plastic. The grip material feels like rubber. Fit is perfect as far as I can tell with 0 play.

Thanks - are you satisfied ? Just curious, but why did you go with Vello over DSTE ?

Thanks. Seems to be pretty much the same as mcoplus.

There are now reports that some can't get 9FPS with the Vello grip but others can using the exact same en-el18 batteries. The one user who got 9FPS (whom I know personally and has posted a screenshot of the 9FPS icon on rear LCD) never updated his D850 FW. There was a vague report on another forum that the latest FW stopped aftermarket grips getting 9FPS. I didn't put much faith in that report at the time but maybe it was true.

For the users who are getting 9FPS with an aftermarket grip could you list what grip, what battery and what FW you are on? That would be very helpful.

There are also other reports that you have to insert the EN-EL15 into the camera, then insert the EN-EL18 into the grip before attaching the grip to have 9FPS work.

I'm hoping to figure all this out before I commit to a D850. If FW is the cause then that may be an issue if all new D850s are shipping with the latest FW. :(

Interesting. I haven't bothered updating my firmware because the few things Nikon said were fixed seemed inconsequential to me - but I'm not impressed if Nikon has screwed over the generic grip manufacturers by altering firmware.

I almost suspect that someone could win a lawsuit against Nikon for taking away functionality with a firmware 'upgrade.'

I was able to get 9 fps with the original firmware on my McoPlus and DSTE grips - WITHOUT having the small battery inside the camera.

Thanks for the info.

Did you still get 9FPS if the EN-EL15 was in the camera?

I haven't tried the EN-EL15 battery in the camera when using the grip (because I want to minimize weight when handholding (although that battery is pretty darn light).)

they halted third party batteries from working in the D500,D850 in camera batteries and nothing came of it and nothing ever will.
My 3rd party battery works just fine in my D850 and gives me 9fps.

So far between this thread and the one at FredMiranda I have yet to have anyone confirm they can get 9FPS with a generic grip when they have updated their FW for the camera.

If anyone with 9FPS working and on FW 1.01 could confirm this is possible that would be great.

Also need to see if it is the newer FW blocking 9FPS, is it only with aftermarket batteries in aftermarket grips OR does an OEM battery in an aftermarket grip work on the new FW.

LOL...pretty hilarious. Only at DPreview can you ask a direct question about something and see a typical dialogue end up somewhere between Penguin water-flight studies and how much William Shatner weighed during the last season of Star Trek.

Obviously no one has the answer as of yet.

I don't think they can detect which grip you're using, only which battery you're using. Unless they re-configured the contacts in the grip, and then re-configured the battery to match. But it would only take so long for the 3rd party battery suppliers to figure it out, which they probably would have to do, unless they were going to let their business growth go down the toilet.
