Where to Buy a New D100 ?

Greetings to all.

A newbie to this forum (and to serious photography as well). After 9 months
(no pun intended) with my Sony DSC-S85, I have grown out of it and am
considering the next step - a DSLR - preferrably Nikon D100 (also I already
own a N80 and could reuse lens/filters).

But while selection of THE DSLR for me didn't take that long, shopping
is killing me. Circuit City and Best Buy carry the 10D but not Nikon (I like
them because they are very close, they offer 4 year protection and they
offer very good financing - like a year of no interest).

The standard shops (adorama/J&R/Ritz) are all stuck at 1700 (like magnet
to iron), while ebay auctions waver all the way down to $1000 (Ob. this
is too good to be true that I will NOT buy from someone who says they
will sell it for $1000).

Can you please advise me where to buy ? And also where I can go and
try out the camera ? (I am kind of ashamed that I haven't yet held this
camera in my hand even once but got bold enough to make the decision,
maybe because of Phil's reviews and that I own N80).

Many Thanks,
Krishna.

ps - I live in San Bruno, CA (Bayarea), so if you have shops that I could go to,
please suggest.

I will give you one place to consider when buying. I purchased my D100 from Cameta Camera. They run auctions on ebay that are bundles. The bundle I got was: Camera, Card Reader, Nikon Bag, Capture Software, and 2 day UPS shipping. I got all this for $1,999. Now realize that this was the price when I bought MINE in February. At that time Canon was selling the D60, and those were hard to come by. The price I paid for everything was the same as the body only price locally, plus no sales tax and S/H was included. Cameta is good to work with too. They will try to sell you a Mack warranty, but they will not be pushy.

Hope this helps.

I bought mine just over two months ago from 17th Street Photo. The price was $1698.89 and I looked and it's still that price. It was a no hassle deal and no one trying to sell me anything that I didn't need/want. They only sell US and not Grey.

Most legit dealers are going to be at $1699.00, because that's what Nikon wants it sold at. You might find it cheaper, and might "buy" yourself more trouble than it's worth. I worked in camera stores for many years and heard too many horror stories from folks trying to save a few bucks. A cheap price doesn't always make a good deal.

Find a good dealer, pay the bill, get the camera home, AND START TAKING PICTURES!!!!!!!

I agree on Cameta. Bought my D100, Extra Battery, MB-100 Grip,
Nikon Bag, CF Reader, 512MB 40X Lexar for $2050 shipped FedEx 2 day.

You can use Nikon's website to verifiy if a seller is a Nikon Dealer.
Thanks for all the links. I am (almost) sold on using Cameta.

The current prices are about $1600 for the basic camera package and
for another $100-$300 fetches you 2nd-day shipping, Capture 3.5,
Lenses, CF Cards, Carry Bag...so on.

How critical is the Nikon Capture 3.5 software ?? (I already have
PhotoShop). Is this the only software I can use to make use
of the RAW (NEF) files ??

thanks,
Krishna.

Nikon Capture seems very popular with many people on this forum. If you shoot raw images you can adjust your white balance, compensate for bad exposure, curves, colour balance etc. All of these changes are saved in the NEF file but you can always get back to the original state.

Personally I do some post processing in Capture and then I move to photoshop for the last couple of stages.

I bought mine $1699.99 at a local Wolf Camera or either can be Ritz. They give you 10 days to try the camera and if you are happy with it, keeping everything in order (unopened software) they give your money back.

The software in this camera is old because Nikon 6.01 is an upgrade that you can download from the Internet with the serial number of the camera.

Besides you can use better programs and have a card reader for downloading the pictures. Tomorrow is my last day to return the camera, but of course I won't , I love my D100. It is good to buy from a local camera store because if you have a problem in the future they even send the camera directly to Nikon. I hope this helps.

I also found Cameta to be just fine, around 1599. There was no memory card in the box, but then, it was not listed on either the site or box. No problem - the cards that used to come with the D100 were too small to be useful anyway.

Good luck.

That's normal. The D100 does not come packaged with a compact flash card from Nikon.

Action Camera in Roseville (about 20 miles past Sacramento on 80) is one of the biggest Nikon dealers in the area. They sell mostly Nikon with some Pentax and just started carrying Fuji digitals. The sales staff doesn't work on commission, knows their product line and I have found them to be quite helpful. They list it at $1699, but you could call and see if they want to make a deal (never hurts to ask). I bought my 4500 there last July and if I recall correctly they have a 2 week return policy if you have all the original packaging and warranty card ect (make sure you double check)

No I don't work for them, I just happen to like the service I get there whether I am buying a $700 camera, or just a neck strap or $10 lens pen.

I would imagine there have to be some camera shops in San Francisco that might want to make a deal.

Good luck

Hi Krishna,

I bought another Nikon D100 body recently from Cameta Camera through eBay for $1599 + $15 for UPS shipping (No tax). They also offer the Mack additional 3-year extended warranty (Total of 4 years) for $79 (B&H charges $99). Their eBay ID is "cametaauctions"

It was exactly as described: a factory new US warranty camera, complete with all accessories.
Greetings to all.

No memory card has EVER been included with the D100 by Nikon in the US.

This is a little late, but San Jose Camera was selling it for $1639. I learned this just after I purchased mine via mail order for about the same because I figured a local dealer wouldn't have a competitive price. :-/

Of course, you'd have to pay sales tax, which it sounds like you didn't have to do by ordering online. So it sounds like you got a better deal anyway. Now you just have to wait. That's the hard part. :-)
