Sounds too good to be true ?

Youtuber YodaYeo ( Nigel Yeo ) came up with this solution. Just with one setting in the menu system ( adjusting from 180 to 150 degrees )

.

Here is the first video

Explained in detail

______

Follow up video by other Youtubers

From 7:20 in this video ( he should have mention that YodaYeo came up with the solution )

_____

The feedback from GH5 owners on YouTube are just overwhelming .....

Panasonic should reward this guy...

It is strange until you read why. And it really does make a big difference.

I can see why vloggers were arguing and getting very different results. No one expected this.

That is a great find as it is one of the few weaknesses of the GH5 interesting thanks for the link

It even seems to work with GX8 , some reports that it does not work with G85 ... , up to 30 % improvement with G7

I will give it a go with my GX8 tomorrow and see what happens :-)

It would be very strange if SW developers and testers in Panasonic don't know this. But why they didn't fix it or explain the workaround? And very oddly it seems that this workaround doesn't work in 24p.

How does one come to these exact numbers? 30%, 32%, 40%, etc? It kinda gives people unrealistic expectations and it is hard for people to replicate these specific improvements since, honestly, there isnt a standard way of measuring CAF speed and accuracy.

Laziness and/or lip service being paid.

I was reading the comments ref to the video.

And it seems to work 100% with GH5S as well ...

I gave it a go with my GX8 and though I felt it did improve AF speed and more importantly accuracy it was not to quite such an extent as it works with the GH5 . Though in fairness as I never use AF in video it is more than likely I have cocked something up in the settings :-)

Don't know much about video just that AF sucks on my GX8, so bear with me.

Unless I'm mistaken, I can't change my shutter to 150 or 180.

With that said, I see a marked improvement when I use 4k/30p (compared to 4k/24p) and SS 1/50s.

Anyone else seeing this, and is there any better settings or caveats?

Hi Hubert , here is a nice wee video that explains shutter speed as it applies to shutter angle it is with the GH4 but you can of course change shutter speed relative to the video settings on the GX8 . Only the first half of the video applies as we do not have a dedicated shutter angle setting { that I could find anyway }

I will stick with manual focus as I have got it down pretty well and it works for me

Amazing. He beated Panasonic engineers to find this easy solution. Speak about competency.

You should listen to that video again. Yodayeo was fishing for rewards from Panasonic. They havent offered to him, yet.

I would say he deserves a wee thank you :-) the AF issue was one of the biggest reported weaknesses of the camera and this workaround makes a significant difference

The theory was a lot of bullocks though

The find was great

I don't have GH5 yet and was torn between GH5 and Sony 7s II.

Last night I stop by Bestbuy, and I saw GH5 on display. I did a few test like in the video. Honestly, I don't understand the science behind those number, but I change shutter angle between 180, 150 and 120. Obviously, 180 is really slow, but 150 and 120 are faster. I see that with shutter angle (SA) 150 is smoother transition from one scene to another, but SA 120 is faster than 150 but not so smooth.

Anyway, the trick definitely improves AF. Now comes to the question - How do I interpret shutter angle to ss. For example, 4K 30p, ss= 1/60. So now if i use shutter angle, let say 150, i just change ISO or Aperture to compensate the EV?

Thanks.
