D850 to achieve 9fps..?

There's been a couple of threads here that mention some other brands as well. Karstar I think? Some problems found in a couple of products.

No. 5 grips - but they are for sale on Kijiji - and I'll keep two that give 9 fps for my two D850s.

And I only bought the real Nikon grip because I was tired of waiting for the others to arrive.

One grip arrive the day after I bought my Nikon grip - and another arrived a day after that. Some of the generics took a LONG time to ship from China. One arrived 2 weeks after the LONGEST estimate of how long it would take.

And when I ordered the grips - my local camera guy couldn't tell me how long it would take for the Nikon grip to be in stock.

AND - I wanted to know which generics provide 9 fps. Now I know. And I've got one that has a built in remote control. That's a feature I was hoping to have anyways.

And I don't mind the investment of $. Using the D850 without a grip was NOT all that pleasant - especially after you get used to a D5 or D4 or D2x - and if you have grips on all your other cameras.

But if you tried putting a 200-400 f4 or 300mm 2.8 or 200mm f2 on the D850 without a grip - and tried hand holding them - you would understand.

Oh - and by the way - you can buy 4 generic grips for less than the price of one overpriced Nikon grip - and the generics have the added advantage of being lighter - which is nice when you are handholding.

***GRIPS***

Nikon grip - 9 fps -

DTSE grip - 9 fps

Vello grip -9 fps

MCoplus - 9 fps (and includes a remote control)

Travor grip - 7 fps

Pixel grip - 7 fps

***Batteries***

Still working on this one, with less data

Nikon EL-18a or EL-18b - 9 fps

AA batteries - 7 fps

Watson el-18 equivalent - 9fps - $70

Wasabi - $46 - probably 9 fps (unknown)

Others... perhaps it is accurate to say that the batteries with built-in endplates typically do NOT give 9 fps, while the batteries that require the BL-5 endcap do give the added speed. Probably would help to put together a list of model numbers for the batteries that work.

***Battery Chamber Cover ***

Nikon BL-5 - $25-30

generic Chinese BL-5 - $6

I have both, but the Chinese one took so long to get here that I ended up with the Nikon one when I found it in stock with the grip. I have not used the knockoff, but it looks fine, Just pointing out that these are available.

***Chargers***

Nikon dual-bay charger - $370

all the rest below, much cheaper

Wasabi dual-bay charger -works fine - $60

DTSE dual-bay charger - unknown, but looks like the exact unit as the Wasabi - about $60

RAVPower dual-bay charger - unknown, but looks like the exact unit at the Wasabi - $50

Myself, I have the Nikon grip, the Watson battery and the Wasabi charger. I meant to buy the Wasabi battery when I bought the charge, but clicked on the wrong link. No problem, the Watson battery works fine, gives 9 fps, fits well in the grip and charger, shows a charge indication in-camera.

There is certainly no problem getting a grip, battery and charger for WAY cheaper than Nikon and still achieve all functions. Plus a remote release in the case of MCoplus (clever).

I've used non-Nikon batteries since the D800e. I was upset that Nikon couldn't have provided some way to use my expensive D700 big battery charger and Nikon batteries in the D800 series. I bought the NIkon grips for D800e and D810, but I bought $70 batteries with the built-in endplates and included charges. Still working fine now, but these batteries don't give the in-camera charge level indication. (I'm thinking you may not be able to do a firmware update with one of these batteries as the camera doesn't know how much charge is in the battery).

Perhaps those with 3rd-party gear could edit this list to add prices, frame rate and an indication of whether there is any problem or not.
For completeness, I'll point out that if, like me, you already have a D5, D4, or D4s, the only things you need are the grip and the cap, so the entry bar is a bit lower.

Ditto and the BL-5 is the same as the one for the D810. Personally If I was going generic I would probably risk a well reviewed charger given the saving, but go original for battery. Generally the batteries are reported to not last as long. I did the calculations and if one goes bang its the equivalent to 200 max strength firecrackers. I have been on trips where batteries are checked and they need to be stored and charged in "Battery bags" so it is a risk.

I wish there was a smaller charger for travel.

As for the grip. I didn't have a choice because I got mine with the camera on the day of release. I think it feels well made. I have no experience of the generic D850 ones but I saw some D810 ones that had controls that were not very reassuring.

The Nikon one is Magnesium alloy and weather sealed. It is far more expensive than the copies so it depends if you need that. That said, third party L brackets to use with the grip are $200 on their own. Also on a tripod the attachment point is the grip whilst some straps attach to the grip or L Bracket that is supported by the grip, so this could be a consideration for some.

Some really interesting info in this thread so thanks to all who have contributed.

Hardest thing to find (at least in the UK) seems to be the 3rd party battery chargers.

Thanks, not used eBay for years (few bad experiences) but maybe I'll take a punt. Normally prefer to use Amazon if poss as returns are easy but nothing on there at present.

Thanks for the detailed review. Any opinion on which generic charger for the En EL 18b is best...I don't see many options on Amazon, and none on B&H. many thanks
You must suck at search engines...

Try putting this in a Google search: "generic MH-26". LOTS of hits come up for me, First one is from Amazon. Second one, Amazon.

This one is Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Channel-Battery-EN-EL18a-Batteries/dp/B00LLI9HTK

Ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/MH-26A-3in...ikon-EN-EL4-EN-EL18-Canon-LP-E4-/142306617785

This is the one I bought, from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Wasabi-Power-Battery-MH-26aAK-EN-EL18a/dp/B0131NS2XO

This last one seems to be something made in China and sold under many brand names. All around $60-75.

There is also a Hahnel EN-EL18 and I use their rechargeables in the Nikon fit speedlights. Reliable make.

Another clone of MH-26:

The Wasabi charger does not seem to available outside N America. The reviews on Amazon raise doubts about the other options, including DSTE. The cost of the charger is the highest barrier to get 9fps in a D850. The cost of the Nikon charger is insanely high. Infuriating

thanks

Has anyone tried the Kastar en-el18 batteries in the D850 Grip? Judy wondering if 9fps can be achieved with those batteries because they are a great price, including charger, on eBay

I can confirm that with the 1.01 firmware upgrade you can get 9fps with third party battery and third party grip. I have the DSTE battery grip and a Power2000 brand en-el18 and I get 9fps. FYI.

Thanks. This is very good to know!

SK

I have the OM version

You need the grip and the 18 battery but also the charger, that is very exotic and expensive
