This is how it has been with my X-T20 and X-E3 with 18-55, 23/2, and 55-200. Things improved somewhat after the T20 firmware update but I think mostly when I use only medium sized center focus point and then move that around as necessary. Turning IS off when not needed may have helped I don't know. My older generation X-E2s is much more accurate with focus for some reason.

I came back from one trip with the 18-55 and X-T20 and almost half the shots were OOF and unusable. I was so disappointed.

Hi,

as I found that there is a trade off in focussing, sometimes I use a bigger box, but usually the smallest possible. Tends to be a bit slower, but more accurate. Also check around these shutter speeds that use IOS mode 2 instead of mode 1. Mode 2 is a bit difficult to keep the image steady in the viewfinder, but will do a better job stabilizing the image when its taken.

All in all, a real learning curve and it seems for me with of without the TC I get sharp and reliable auto focus with the smallest af box.
