MC-11 fw version for Canon 400 5.6 on A7r ii

Hi,

I've made the choice to instead of getting a BIF machine in a different system and selling the EF 400 5,6 upgrade my A7 to an A7r ii and try the Canon lens with it and the MC-11 adapter that I own. I photograph sitting or gently swimming birds half the time anyway.

Have read that AF performance with this combo can depend upon the lens age (has been in production since the early 90s) (mine is from Sept. 2014 acc. to the date code) and the adapter fw version. Since it seems the MC-11 is hard to downgrade, correct me if I'm wrong, I want to know if anyone has any input on the fw 1.02 that it currently has vs the latest fw that the Sigma Optimization program will install right now.

Definitely upgrade or wait and try with the camera first?

I'm hoping the later date of manufacture of my lens will make it AF at least ok. It kind of has to be better than it was on my A7 anyways..

My EF 400 5.6 L + MC-11 focuses fine (A7RII).

The firmware of the MC-11 is the last one before they started becoming troublesome with Canon lenses (1.5?). I probably used the combination with Ver. 1.2 as well, with no problems, but I can't be 100% sure.

If you tell me how to find the date code, I'll tell you when my lens was made...
Thanks, manufacture date would be interesting to know:

So, mine is UB0321, which should mean 03-2013.

Surprised it's so recent: bought it used around 2015...
I use my A7rii with MC-11 adapter with Cannon 35/2 IS USM, 85 1.8, 70-200/4 non IS and 2x extender III with no issues. Focus is good and fast on all lenses but at times can get finicky with the extender and 70-200 together. Never have updated the firmware on camera or adapter. I'm of the firm belief if there is no problems don't go looking for one.

im very pleased with the sigma adapter and cannon lenses. In fact I don't own one Sony lenses due to have Zeiss ZM, Leica, Nikon and other glass.

Hope this helps.

Quote for sooth. I won't update the firmware of the adapter until I've tried it with the intended combo first.

The classic Canon lens date code for FL, FD and a lot of EF lenses runs something like UD0626 and is printed on the rear baffle.

The first letter (U) stands for the Utonomiya factory, F for Fukushima, O for Oita or it could be missing.

D stands for 1963, 1989 or 2015 on a 26 year cycle beginning in 1960.

The next two digits are the month of manufacture; 01 is January so 06 would be June.

The purpose of the final digits hasn't been disclosed.

Canon's current date code is based on the 10 or 12 digit serial number, you'd have to Google that.

Thanks for the answer including functionality (AF works well) and firmware version of the MC-11 (I won't upgrade unless I find the AF pretty useless) and the age of your lens (comparable to mine). I'm looking forward to a stabilized EF 400 5,6, on FF( has seemed happier with ff so far) (though this will be a high res ff).

I'd just like to add that I now possess an A7rii and with my MC11 and EF 400 5,6(from 2014) AF works, as I would describe it, "fine", at least AF-S in decent light. It takes a split second to focus everytime but that should be enough for still and slow or predictable movements. Looking forward to taking the combo out into the field.

It is also hilarious to get sharp shots (of still things) handheld at 1/40.

AFAIK the firmware versions for the MC-11 are reversible with some extra steps. There have been threads on that subject in this forum: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/1064
