First sorry for any writing mistake, english is not my first language.

So i know there's a lot of comparisons between these 2 cameras, but none answer my questions.

I am a makeup artist and will be using the camera for photos of my clients makeup (for facebook and instagram), my own makeup photos and ocasional 30 second videos of the makeup as well.

I was wondering if there is any difference in the photo and video quality between the two, and that's really it. I really do like the flip up screen in the A5100 that helps with taking my own pictures but I will buy the A 6000 if the quality is better.

I'm not a professional photographer, will mainly use the camera in Auto, inside my studio with my ring light.

I do know the A5100 does not have EVF and hot shoe but that doesnt bother me since i wont be needing to connect nothing to the camera and will be taking the pictures inside. I also know A6000 is faster in continuous shooting but that isn0t really relevant for me.

Thank you so much.

No difference at all. Same still image, same video quality. About still image - you can check and compare them in imaging-resource "comparometer" (google "comparometer imaging-resource" and then select your cameras - they have both A5100 and A6000 there)

The flip screen is definitely useful while all the advantages of 6000 are rather irrelevant for you purpose. Dont even bother getting kit lens, absolutely useless for you. SEL50f18 will be perfect for the job, unless you want to get something more exquisite like the Zeiss.

Agree. Also the touch screen focus is nice for video on the A5100.

I am considering these 2 cameras at this moment as well for my daughter. From what read there are absolutely no difference in photo and video qualities.

If you don't need the evf and the hot shoe then go for the a5100. It's smaller, the flip up screen and the touch screen are nice features to have. It is also cheaper so save your money for a nice lens.

Inside= flash. Being forever stuck on camera may not let you show off your makeup. Proper lighting can mean everything

I work with continuous lighting, so light isn’t my problem I think
okay! the 5100 and the 6000 are the same in terms of AF and IQ etc. The 5100 has a flip up screen which is great. The 6000 has alot more inputs and outputs, an eye piece, a flash hot shoe, and more buttons/dials. If your just going to put it in auto then it does not matter. For a 50-100$ price difference, passing on the A6000 seems like a bad idea to me. Did you need the flip up screen?

You might be able to get equally good results with your phone....

As an aside, you may not think you need a flash.. but you may be wrong. The ability to control light is alot harder with a continuous setup if there is any ambient light. If you want folks to marvel at your makeup you probably don't want them staring at the dirty table or wall near the model )

It's like I said, I do value the flip screen because if I am taking pictures of my own makeup or taking pictures of my eye makeup for example, it helps me to see what i'm doing.

Does the A5100 have HDMI out like the A6000 has? A large screen is even better than a flip up screen in the studio, so it is good if you can connect one. Seems both models have that option.

There is a pretty consistent evidence at Photonstophotos and DXOMark of the A5100 performing worse than the A6000 at low ISO. The A5100 might even perform a bit worse than the A5000 at low ISO. I believe I've heard more reports of A5100 overheating while recording video too.

Since I used both models extensively, can assure you that for your work, you do not need ANY of the extra functionalities of 6000. Why complicate your life with more gadgets - flashes, soft boxes, triggers, external monitors - more cables, power supplies, stands etc, etc.
Keep it simple, get the 5100, try to use only natural light, if necessary add reflectors, which are cheap and simpler to use. If you cant get natural light, use your ring and if necessary get LED pannel/s. I suppose you already have experience with lights being makeup artist. Working with flashes requires learning and experience, means more time and money.

I completely agree. Get what you need and not what you might need. Pretty soon these guys will talk you into an A9! :)

You could always use the smartphone app for live view and some camera control. If I were doing self-portraiture, this would be my preferred method, as you can have the camera a greater distance from you and eliminate the distortion/contortion you get from "arms-length selfies".

If you end up using the smartphone app, you don't have much advantage/disadvantage with either camera for your intended purpose. However, if you decide to use the camera for other things, you may find the a6000 is the stronger choice; the EVF sure is nice when you're out in the sun.

Someone told me this “there is a pretty consistent evidence at Photonstophotos and DXOMark of the A5100 performing worse than the A6000 at low ISO. The A5100 might even perform a bit worse than the A5000 at low ISO. I believe I've heard more reports of A5100 overheating while recording video too.”

since you have used both, can you tell me if it is true? Thank you

Yes but it is not full sized on either. Neither can use an audio input so sound as to be dubbed or use on camera. The a6000 hot shoe does support a decent microphone. Also, not sure the reason for a flip, out screen if you plan to use a monitor. The a7 is cheap and has full in and output.

I have the A5100 which I like and is easy to give to someone else to take a reliable OK photo. It has it's limitations as you'll have to dig into the menu to make setting changes instead of using buttons as on the A6000. The A5100 does have touch to focus and shoot which is very handy for video which the A6000 doesn't. I might be wrong but I thought the A5100 had some other improvements video wise - check youtube A5100 for video.

Both cheap and good buys for the money.

A5100 had a better codec, but that was added to the A6000 later in a software upgrade. So for video they should be identical now.
