Is the A1 overpriced?

only socially acceptable, it has a long tradition. (I don't know what their legal system says, but the CONCEPT that it is improper to destroy competitiors is quite nomal there - just like informal relationships between companies is normal).

Canon may perfectly well be using the 300D in a deliberate attempt to eliminate competition, just as Honda did when they destroyed the world motorcycle business 30 or 40 years ago. I believe the only major players to survive from that date are BMW and Harley - both of whom were very specialized niche players at that time.

So this may be part of Canons strategy.

Oddly their business climate is quite different from the West (or maybe not so oddly!) - and when a mfr becomes dominant in his field - as Honda is in motorcycles - it often does NOT result in harm to consumers, or result in them "throwing thier weight around". Honda still builds bikes that are the best in the world.

Their participatioin in Grand Prix Motorcycle racing is a good case in point. After being laughed at by the Europeans when Honda first entered GP bike racing, in some 8 years Honda became so dominant they were routinely winning every class in every race. They then started selling their factory racing bikes to a few qualified riders (unheard of) -and the Triumph factory got hold of a genuine Honda racing bike. Triumph was literally unable to duplicate what the Japanese had made. (Interestingly enough their attempt to hire Japanese riders failed, and they used English professionals riders)>

Honda then withdrew from GP motorcycle racing as a factory, with the statement that they had proved what they set out to prove, and that their dominance was harming the sport.

The first point is, given the Japanese business climate, Canon may be deliberately taking over their market.

The second point is, this may not damage the consumer if they are successful.

But I don't think anybody outside Canon's highest management can even guess what their actual aims are, given their different business culture. My onw comments are just speculation, nothing else.

Somehow I don't think this tradition is unique to the Japanese.

It's a universal convention in business with some cultural and
legal (no doubt derived from the cultural aspects) differences
from country to country. That of course doesn't make it right.

I'd sooner have an E-1 than any of the D-SLR's but I can't afford
it. Just like I can't afford a D100, Fuji S2 or EOS 10D which are
all better photographic tools than the EOS 300D.
You have better bad taste than no taste at all...
??
Seems rather obvious to me... Apperently you prefer the E-1 immensly, above all other DSLR's. Yet you can't afford one. Just like you can't afford a D100, Fuji S2 or EOS 10D. Therefore I wrote the above, meaning: you have better a 300D than no DSLR at all. Capice?
